My new build

After debating on what i should do, i decided to build a very low budget computer, and save some for a new bike and some stuff for my car. If i sell my laptop this is the desktop im thinking of getting right now:

Hitachi Deskstar 160GB SATAII 8MB Hard Drive - $69
Asus A8N5X Socket 939 nForce4 ATX AMD Motherboard - $75
Sapphire ATI Radeon x1600PRO 256MB PCI-E - $111
Rosewill Silver/Black Mid-ATX Case - $45
Logisys 24-Pin 550W Power Supply - $20
G.Skill 1GB (2x512MB) DDR400 CL 2.5 Memory - $66
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice Socket 939 CPU - $117

Total w/Shipping: $541

I already have a DVD Burner, DVD-ROM, and a 17" CRT Monitor.

looks sexy... but IMHO, IF you are gona want to play either COD2, Quake 4, or future games, you should get a Pentium D 805... some budget dual-core for the future dual-core supporting games... that is just IMO

Hmmm... i didnt really think about that. I can get a Pentium D for around $140 i think on newegg. The only thing is, the motherboards and RAM cost more for them.

And i am going to OC the crap out of this, im hoping to get my cpu to at least 2.4Ghz, OC the RAM, and OC the video card.

EDIT: This is also going to be my temporary computer for several months. I hope to save up some more money and buy a Conroe when they come out, and possible a new nvidia 8xxx series card.

this is what u had i just changed the mobo, processor and ram and it is a little bit more money:

Processor: Intel Pentium D 805 - $134
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-8I945PL-G ATX Intel Motherboard - $86
Ram: CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB DDR2 533 - $72
Video Card: SAPPHIRE Radeon X1600PRO - $101
Harddrive: HITACHI Deskstar T7K250 160GB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - $69
PSU: LOGISYS Computer PS550ABK 550Watts Power Supply - $19
Case: Rosewill R7329 Silver/Black Computer Case - $44

$525

keep in mind the Pentium D 805 is underclocked... so u should be able to clock it higher

well if we tell him something is a bit more to many times he will be spending $150 more than he originally planned

Everything looks good. The only thing I'm debating is the GFX card. For a bit more you can get the GeForce 6800GS. I heard it is way better than the X1600. Look here:

The 6800GS will overclock very well too, so you can get exellent performace. (Don't think of me as a fanboy, just pointing out the facts)
Look here too:

Yeah, the 6800GS is better than the X1600XT, and it's only the X1600Pro he's considering. It wouldn't be top of my list, though, given the price and the fact that it's outperformed by both the X850XT and 7600GT. The 7600GS is better than the X1600Pro, and also slightly cheaper, if the X800GTO2, or 7600GT are outside the budget.

If it's for gaming only, i'd go with the AMD. Newer/future multithreaded games aren't likely to run too well on that PC anyway. If it's a general purpose machine, though, and you want to use other, CPU intensive taks, the Pentium D 805 wouldn't be a bad idea, although wouldn't you be using the system in your sig for that sort of thing?.

I know its better, but im trying to keep the price as low as possible. Thats why i went with the x1600PRO for $111 instead of the x1600XT for $149.

Exactly :)

I actually didnt look at the nVidia line, so i'll look into that.

Thats why i originally picked out the AMD A64 3000+, because i know its a very good overclocker and performs well for games. But if i get a Conroe Q3 this year, there wouldnt be much point in wanting a dual-core now. And im selling my laptop, thats why im buying a desktop.

I did a bit if research, and i found that the 7600GT is better than the x1600PRO by a fair bit, but it costs $179. But the 7600gs is worse than the x1600PRO, so i think i'll stick with the x1600PRO.

Im going to be doing a few modifications to my list, i'll post back then.

couldn't your laptop hold you off until you get your conroe??? then u could spend more money on getting that!

but if ur sure you want to build a budget gaming one, then i would get the X850XT instead of the 7600GT (unless you are planning on using SLI) IMO the X850XT is a better bang for the buck... a little less money and better mostly because of the 16 pixel pipelines and the 256-bit memory interface... well i think it is better... but that is just me...

and if ur getting a conroe, then ya, get a athlon... when you get your conroe are you selling this? or using it as a 2nd computer (like, playing games on the conroe PC, while talking online on this one)

Regardless of the X850 vs 7600GT debate, both cards are more expensive than he's looking at.

The exact opposite of what i've seen. Take a look at http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?cid=3&id=1856.

Originally the 7600GS was a little too expensive to be a serious contender (priced at a similar price to the X1600XT). Now, the price is far more reasonable.

Thats weird, on this site it says its worse: http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=387&card2=350

And it seems as though the 7600GS has lower pixel and texture fill rates.

But i would trust the link you posted more, since i think gpureview is based off of user benchmarks.

Well, i really want to get a new bike before the summers over. And if i waited, the value of my laptop would decrease severely.

And i know the x850XT is better, but its out of my preferred budget range. And it doesnt support SM3, not that its a big deal anyways.

I dont know what i will do with this, im thinking i'll save it and when my parents need a new comp i'll sell them mine.

At the moment, you shoudnt really spend too much on the mobo. Conroe will not work on any motherboards out now.

Im really pissed off as I have a Tt big typhoon, and it cant be reused, so when the time comes ill sell the lot as a bundle: CPU, mobo & Cooler (And im most likely getting a 7600GT before that, so a GPU will be in the bundle too)

I actually just remembered, i have an AGP 9600XT 256MB card, so most likely i will buy an Athlon 64 3000+, but with an AGP motherboard. That way i can save even more money on the mobo, and i dont need a video card.

or u could buy a board with board with both AGP and PCIe (like my dad's) incase u wanted to upgrade in the future... but i suppose it wont matter cus ur getting a conroe l8er on....

we must be suckers posting here on easter...lol... mebbe no1 likes us...lol

My family is coming up at 3:30, after then i wont be on the rest of the day.

Heres my new and updated build. I got even lower specs, but i really only want this to play CSS and NFSMW fairly well for a few months. It's almost identical to my previous Sempron build.

Rosewill Silver/Black Mid-ATX Case - $45
WD 120GB 7200RPM 8MB ATA100 IDE Hard Drive - $65
Gigabyte GA-K8U Socket 754 ATX Motherboard - $45
G.Skill 1GB (2x512MB) DDR400 CL 2.5 Memory - $66
AMD Sempron64 2800+ Socket 754 1.8Ghz - $73

Total w/Shipping is: $324.60

Keep in mind that i already have a DVD Burner, DVD ROM, ATI 9600XT Video Card, Mouse, Keyboard, Monitor, and Speakers.
