my new laptop appears to have died...

hi, i'm hoping some good soul can point me in the right direction on this one...

we apologise for the inconvenience but windows did not start successfully. a recent hardware or software change might have cuased this.

if your computer stopped responding or restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose last known good configuration to the most recent setting that worked.

if a recent start up attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power or reset button was pressed, or if you arent sure what caused the problem, choose start up windows normally.

safe mode
safe mode withy monitoring
safe mode with command prompt

last known good configuration (your most recent setting that worked

start windows manually (highlighted)

there's then a counter counting down from 30 at where it restarts itself.

if i choose to restart it the windows xp start up windows screen comes up but it flashes off before loading, a blue screen with white text flashes up but goes too quickly to read what it says, it then restarts with the HP screen and goes back to the window above. if i try to start in safe mode (or any of the other options) a screen of text scrolls down the screen before flashing blue and going back to HP start up window.

i hadn't been downloading anything or installed anything new. i have symantec anti-virus corporate edition and haven't been having any problems. all i had done the previous night was instead of shutting down, i had closed it and let it hibernate for a couple of hours. when i came back on it was very slow, a message did pop up saying something corrupted and that i should run dskchk utility (i thought this might have been spyware) so i shut it down and thought no more about it. next time i turned it on the above happened.

if i hold down F8 it opens on the "windows advanced options menu" screen but again anything i choose goes through the same motions as mentioned above.

it's a HP pavillion DV 2000. does anyone know what i can do? i thought it came with a windows cd (that i didnt need to get it going) but cant find one so it may not have.

it sounds like you are having a hardware failure, but there is also a chance that your windows installation has become corrupted. you can attempt to reinstall windows using the CD that should have come with your computer. if you did not get a cd with it, there should be an authentication sticker with a serial number somewhere on the bottom of the laptop. that will tell you what version of windows you have. you can then find a friend that has that same version, except when you install it, make sure to use the serial number on YOUR laptop, not anybody else's number.

the easiest thing to do would be to return it if it is new. it shouldnt have a bsod (blue screen of death) error at all.

thanks cleric! i'll try getting my hands on a cd, i didnt get one with my machine (my girlfriend has the same one and she didnt get a disk)...
