hey, i was wondering if it is possible (and legal) to create my own personal server thru/on my school network?
i have an old dell tower that i wanted to convert into my own server for my own personal use so that i can download movies on to my desktop at school off of dc++ and then throw them on the server and connect to the server at home to watch movies on my tv at home.

is this possible???

thanks
rob

Possible? Yes.

Legal? That depends on what your school computer use policy is... they probably don't want you to be watching (illegally downloaded) movies on their computers.

For a home desktop server, I recommend downloading a Linux distro of your choosing. I like Slackware, but as a novice Linux user you might be better off using RedHat or Ubuntu. Be sure to install the ssh, ftp and apache packages upon installation. More than you could ever care to know about Linux can be found on the Web - so if you choose to go this route, I suggest you do a little "Googling"

PS - the website in my signature runs on a home desktop running Slackware.

Why don't you either download them at school and put them on an external hard drive, or just download them at home? If you want to access your server at NJIT from home you are still going to be limited by your home internet connection. And if I remember, NJIT's upload speeds can vary greatly.

Why not just ask Coaster? :P

Coaster doesn't give out the DC hub IP for use outside the dorm. NJIT's upload speeds are decent, but the DL's are crap. Although I agree with you that he should do what I do and just store it all on externals.

At least my ping finally went down after I reset my router.
