I'm writing you because I've got a problem with an old personal computer('98 i think) which i was still using and which now does not turn on. That pc was i think a pentium III with windows 98 as SysOp. One day i decided to download the IE updater and i ran it. as I reboot the sys i was stopped, as soon as windows started loading, by a pop-up talking about a kernel error. well, i said, i tried to reboot again but the pc wasn't turning on, neither with the bios shell. actually, when i press the turn-on button on the case, the pc seems to be dead. what can it be and what can i try to do?

thank you a lot

So nothing happens when you press the power button?
How old is the computer, the power supply might of died?

well I have another pc, newer than that, which i usually use; the problematic computer was being used by my little brother as a game and simply programs place. In this way, i was trying to restore it. I don't think is a problem of power supply for it had gone out just after I made that update, so i might think about a software problem which concerned also an hardware one. I've too tried to change the power wire, but nothing change...

thank u

I would think power supply. It can't really be a software problem when the computer just doesn't power on.

If you really want to, you could try taking out 1 stick of ram if you have more than 1, and take out the hard drive. Then try to start it, see if anything happens.

Maybe reset the cmos on your motherboard.

I would suggest to scrap it otherwise, you can get a very basic system for a few hundred now adays.

I think you have to take out the battery on your motherboard for a couple of minutes to reset the cmos. Dont hold me to that though

if you can manage to find the cmos battery on your motherboard, just take it out as coddie suggested. If you still have the manual for your motherboard, it will tell you how to in there.

I am thinking the PSU. I dont think that the CMOS has anything to do with it. If he just restarted it then it doesnt affect the CMOS. IF that computer uses an ATX conenctor get the newer PC's PSU and switch it.

I've tried to remove the battery for a bit but nothing's changed, i've tried either to change it but no result. Is it a way to be sure the problem is the Psu? 'cause before buying something new i'd like to be sure that i'll use it...thank you anyway for the care
