My PC Problem.

I had been having a PC problem with my HP Pavilion m7470n. Of late, it had been shutting down & restarting itself - mainly when I was on the internet. Restoring my being logged on was not a problem, and - normally - I could resume what I was doing for the rest of the day, without event.

Now, the matter is worse. This morning, the PC clicked off, and restarted - all on its own again. But, now, there is no video. The monitor's power button does illuminate - letting me know that it has power - but then that light green light turns amber, and I immediately get the notice of my monitor going into 'Sleep Mode'. No matter what I attempt to do, this always happens. I cannot get my system 'up', and don't know what to do.

Would anyone have a logical suggestion for me?

Advanced thanks.

Try using a different monitor first, if it works great, if not its probably the motherboard. Some things you can try are disconnect all your other drivers ( cd, dvd, floppy) only leaving your hard drive connected and try and boot like that. If it works flash your Bios, and do a destructive restore on your computer. If it doesn't work you have to perform troubleshooting steps for each piece of your computer until you can isolate the problem. Go to the manufacturers website for the troubleshooting steps.

Have you noticed any odd sounds coming from inside the case? Are there any other oddities popping up lately?

Potential problems:

* System overheating - When was the last time you blew out the inside of your system?

* RAM - Have you been getting random BSOD's?

* Hard Drive - A dying HDD could cause your system to crash and restart, and if it's finally DEAD DEAD, it would explain why you wouldn't be able to boot into Windows. Is your hard drive being detected in BIOS?

even without booting into windows you would still get some activity on the monitor. my laptop just had the HD go out a coulple months ago. you could still get into the BIOS and everything, i just wouldn't boot windows.

he doesn't know if it's in the bios because absolutely nothing is showing on the monitor. i would try a different monitor first then work your way back

I do have another monitor, here, and will definitely give that a shot. I don't know how to 'flash' a BIOS, so I would deeply appreciate info on how to go about that. Thanks much.

Just the other day, there was a low, continuous noise emanating from my system. I can only liken it to the distant sound of a whistle (continuous, though) that would not stop until the system was rebooted. Then, there has (of late) been times when I heard a loud whirring noise coming from the case.
That noise was the same type of sound which is heard when the PC is first booted up, but - in this case - it stayed sounding as it did until I (also) had to reboot the PC.

I am ashamed to admit that this is something I hadn't ever thought about doing. But I will do that as soon as I finish authoring this message.

I have no idea what BSOD's are, but can say that I don't recall receiving many error messages on memory issues. I DO remember, a time or two, when there was notice of my being 'out of memory', and I didn't understand that because of the fact that I wasn't multi-tasking, or anything like that.

Well, I was able to connect a different monitor to my computer - and it so happens that the problem yet exists. I am going out, now, to see about another hard drive for my computer, and hope that this will cure my pc's ailment.

Someone else had suggested, also, a possible video card issue. I looked into the prices for another one (good one, being that I am a photographer), only to learn that I would have to upgrade my power supply too. The salesperson explained that the power supply which comes with the systems are normally rated between 200-350 watts, and that I'd need one with (at least) a 400 watt rating.

I had to come back and let everyone know that my problem is no more. It turned out that my hard drive was the culprit. With a replacement sitting in the pocket, now, I am back in business - and I wish to thank everyone here for your helpfulness.

This is the problem of your computer's RAM, Change it and your computer will be ok... Try this..

You mean to tell me that RAM can go bad - especially to the point where it would wreak so much havoc on a PC? I have considered getting 2-Gigs more, by which to double the capacity of what's already available, but that would have been getting another two sticks to work in conjunction with the ones I now have. If I have to do away with the present two - then I will. But all I know, for now, is that my PC is working fine with the new hard drive installed.

Thanks.

Hey all. back again - and with the same problem happening again.

All of a sudden (yesterday) this PC started acting up again. It will shut down on its own, and restart all by itself. Since then, it has done this a number of times. In fact, it just finished going through another of its cycles just a few minutes ago. I know that someone mentioned RAM as being a likely suspect, but I surely can't afford to spend money on more RAM - if that proves NOT to be the remedy. This sure is a butt-kicker because I really NEED my pc - but can't seem to get any work done on it.
