my PSU enough for the GTX 580?

Yeah like Aastii said you wont have any problems with that Psu....but can i ask why your wanting to upgrade from the GTX 460?..Ive not come across anything that it cant handle with ease yet.

Would a Cpu upgrade instead not intrest you? something like a X6 Phenom?

I would trade in a 460 for 580 anyday.

If it was me i would say not to upradge the cpu because the current phenom line only has a certain amount of life left in it due to bulldozer being on the way. A 580 is gonna be top notch for while and can be moved forward/put in a different system, whereas i'd say it would be better to get a top quality cpu when the new tech comes out.

IMHO a better upgrade for him would be a 64-bit version of Windows, 4/6/8GB DDR3 and a new motherboard, if he has enough money. (Which he should, the above costs less than 580) Once games start using more than 4GB of RAM his OS is gonna be a problem.

i agree that a 64 bit os would be good, but again i stress when you have that much money to spend, why would you go and get a new mobo now with both sandy bridge and bulldozer around the corner you should wait for that to come out and then also invest in a cpu, the ram is fine for now and since ddr3 is getting so cheap now that isnt a problem.
at least you can move GTX580 to the new mobo without any compatibility issues and have a top end part for a new build based around new tech.

I would agree with innercx here.

If OP has enough money for a large upgrade in a month and a bit time, they could go Sandy Bridge, or if they can wait until Bulldozer comes out a few months after that. It is that thing of "There is always new tech, so you will always be waiting for the next thing", but with CPU sockets, that isn't the case, 1155 and AM3+ will be around for a good while, like AM3 and 1156/1366 have been, so it would deffinately be a much better option to wait

sorry for the late replies. thanks for the quick help about my PSU. im looking to upgrade later on i just want to double check if my PSU can handle a GPU like that.

and i am starting to see DDR3 RAM is getting cheaper then DDR2 RAM! which i think is kinda wierd. but in the same time a very good thing if i want to upgrade to a DDR3 motherboard because of teh new CPUs coming out next year. I am going to wait for the new CPUs mostly teh AM3+ and see how much they will go for and if teh price is right then ill jump on one and then get a better GPU. money is a factor for me i really wish i have $500 + to spend on a high end GPU. we can only dream huh? :)

but again thanks for the help

and i do have a Genuine Kit from Microsoft which came with both 32bit windows 7 and 64bit windows 7 so i can upgrade later on which is a good saving as well even tho i piad like $200 for it a month ago.

(yes the shop i took my PC to installed a bad copy of windows 7 and they are now out of business so i had to get the kit because i really didnt want to deal with reformatting

so i went to Nivida's web site and took a look at the GTX 580 and i saw it ask for minimum PSU to be 600w

well i have a 650w PSu with 12v@52amps

this is teh PSU i have http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139005&cm_re=650w_corsair-_-17-139-005-_-Product

will it be enough to handle one GTX 580? or will i have to upgrade my PSU as well? :(

What you need to ask yourself is how much does the gtx580 use, added in to all other components watt usage in the system in question. The psu recommended wattage supply is nice, but for me it's sometimes more than I need. Find out what the power draw of everything you have, then add the draw of the 580 and that will be how many watts you need.

Its not that simple as a rule, as it is the amperage distribution that is important. The Corsair will be fine though.
