My Retro Computer

For my senior project, I want to build a computer. My goal is to gut out an old, retro looking computer, and put all the latest hardware in it. As of now, i know virtually nothing about the inside of a computer, and I'm looking for advice as to what to read for learning purposes, and what i should put inside the computer.

Any helpful comments would be greatly appreciated.
 
This sounds like a fun idea. I have thought about taking a Mac Classic and gutting it, but then it only has a 9" screen, and what would I really use it for.
