My screen changes resolutions automatically!

For some reason my screen on my laptop changes resolutions on its on every once in a while and this is very annoying. I hooked up an s-video chord to my computer and since then it does it, I hope I posted this in the right section, and I would appreciate help as soon as possible thanks alot!! :)

try system restore....
 
My old compaq persario v2000 did this, I think the video cards messed up in it, It would do this, I would power it off, turn it back on to BSOD. Only way to fix it was reinstall windows. Very weird that reinstalling an os would affect the video card at all though, Did that two times.
