Ok so this is going to be kind've a long post lol so bare with me. I went to best buy and bought an out of the box gateway computer (i know i know big mistake) but this was the specs:
windows vista 32 bit
amd phenom 9500 QUAD CORE 2.2 ghz
3gb ddr 2 ram
gateway motherboard
onboard sound
onboard video
500gb hard drive.
gateway power supply

ok so whatever its a decent computer you can watch youtube videos with.Iive been updating it lately and it now has these specs:

amd phenom 9500 QUAD CORE 2.2GHZ
3.5gb ddr2 ram
gateway motherboard
onboard sound
nvidia gforce 9800gt sli 1gb ram (overclocked gpu)
500gb hard drive
thermal take 450w power supply.

ok so the adding of ram, power, and video card. I now have wat id describe as a better than the average joe computer, but not quite hacking the pentagon from my basement type stuff lol.
anywayz, i like to play alot of flight simulator x which if anyone knows is quite the resource hogging program. i only have graphics and preformance and weather turned up about 1/2 and with no add on programs like complex scenery, or weather, and i still get an undesireable frame rate, not unplayable just not ..."smooth" so im going to upgrade again ...but im a little confused...

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN I NOW GIVE YOU THE FEATURE PRESENTATION OF THIS POST (LOL)

Ok so im thinking my problem is the factory mother board...probably got crappy frontside bus...or maybe another .5 of ram who knows...thats where i need help....I mean how easy is it to just slap a new motherboard into your stock gateway case and hook all the existing equipment up to it.. I know you have to buy one to match the pins on your processor but is that all ? Where can i go on my comp to see the pin count/config of my processor...and when i go to a website how can i see if the motherboard will fit into my case? and does anyone have a website to suggest buying custom parts from. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Thanx!!

OK here we go first of all what is you budget for around $200 you can have a kick ass CPU and motherboard for $120 you can have the newest CPU technology and a decent motherboard anything in between then we can come up with something.

I don't think a new motherboard is going to boost your performance any that you will notice especially your games maybe overall performance but probably not enough for you to notice. How ever a new CPU will benefit you well when playing games even though you have a Quad Core CPU it is out dated and is old technology a new Dual core CPU would actually out preform the one you have.

I to play Flight Simulator X and with all my settings on high I get about 20FPS average which is fine with me but some people don't like anything under 30FPS but my game is smooth so I don't care.

I think the best thing you could do is upgrade your CPU/Motherboard then later on update you GPU again which you shouldn't have to by another PSU when you do or if you get another motherboard that is SLI compatible then you can just get another 9800GT(you will need new PSU for that) and use SLI but I single better card would be better then 2 lower performance cards.

I would also recommend you get a new case they are cheap about $30 for a good one and that should give you better air flow which will cool your PC better giving it a longer life and better performance. Most people overlook the case but is actually a very important part of the computer.

If you wont to know a good site for computer components then looks no further newegg.com is the only place to shop for parts if you are in the US or Canada they have the lowest prices and the best customer service around.

New mobo will be unlocked, allowing for overclocking and will provide a better upgrade path for your future. 3.5 gb of ram most likely means you aren't running uniform ram (Unless you mean that you have 4gb and your os only recognises 3.5, in which case, you're all aces.) However, the original phenoms were less than spectacular. A phenom 2 would do you a world of good, even a tri-core would most likely perform better than your current CPU.
