beta versions is for people to try the software and test it.
so if there is any bugs they report it
so the people who made the program know what are the problems that the users face while using it
so they collect a nice amount of bugs and fix it.
then release another beta version
till there is almost no errors reports from users
that's when they release the final version

They are normally free, but many times only certan users have acess to them.

A popular example of a beta out now, would be Microsoft's Windows Vista Beta. At first they only allowed MSDNN users (I think) to download it, then they released it to the public for a short while, and now it is only allowed to be downloaded by certain people again.

But then there's the subject of Alpha versions.

Those are usually similar to beta versions but mostly only for the people within a company or developer team.

It'd be like test driving a new car tire that isn't proven reliable yet...at about 100MPH down the interstate. Is it gonna blow and send me flying, or will it work? I don't know!

Vista Beta runs fine, except for what is caused by my crappy IGP. Office 2007 Beta runs fine, Audacity 1.3 Beta runs fine....I like beta software.
