My system just crashed

Well if it's working OK for you and it's a hassle for you to get the disc and you're upgrading anyway in a few months then hang on in there and use it until you get your new machine.
 
Yes, but is there any way to reload windows or do this scan without the disc if I wanted to?

Also, due to my lack of RAM problems, I sometimes have to turn off my computer just by pushing the power button when it freezes. What problems can this cause and what does it actually do that is harmful to the computer? Might this contribute to problems in the future? (for the next few months anyway?)

It's OK if you do it occasionally but if you do it a lot it can cause problems because the operating system doesn't shut down properly. You might get issues like you had before with files becoming corrupt.
 
Which might be the reason the files became corrupt in the first place. On better news, my brother is selling me his computer for $30, and all it needs is a new battery. Not sure the exact specs yet, but it's way newer than this one.
 
Just because it's newer doesn't mean it's better. Knowing the specs would help a lot. There are laptops sold today that are brand new that have terrible specs and people don't know any better.

Let's be honest here: anything made after 2003 is an upgrade for him. :cool:

Whether or not it's worth spending $30 is a different story, but it's an upgrade. ;)
