Put six 500 gb Velociraptors in Raid 0. Transfer rate is 886.6 mb/sec and Access time is 5.4 ms.....Lovin the speed and size!

I'm using on board sata. I spent $630 total. Not interested in SSD......just wanted to be different from the norm and have a little fun.

Yeah since SSD's came onto the larger Velociraptors have come down in price, but they're still more expensive than I'd wanna pay.

yeah, i totaly understand that you wanna have fun, but for $630, i would have gone with 2 ssd's in raid 0. way more reliable, less chance of drive failure, and you would have had more spped. my friend went with 2 x 256 gig samsung 830's, for a total of 512 gigs at over a gig per second. but, then again you have 3TB running at near 1gig per second, . not bad, and deffinatly out of the norm

Nice, what are the specs of the rest of your system? And I hope you have a good back up drive because if one drive takes a crap then say good bye to all of your data.

I have 3 teenagers in the house with computers I built for them, thus the Raptors will eventually move to their pc's (2 raptors each). I will then migrate to SSD. I have 6 tb's of backup space....so no problems with data loss.

Nope. That's not a problem....as long as you actually back up ;) lol

Financially it made the most sense for me, as they will all be passed to the kids machines because their hdd's are either almost full or very old and living on borrowed time. I put them in raid to have a little fun. I'm new to this site and didn't join to be ridiculed!!!

Fair enough.. my apologies !

On a side note.. I've heard of people using the shell of the raptors to cool other 2.5" drives.. I dont know if it works but seems like a neat way to partially reuse them if an original drive dies.

Thanks.:)
Once the raptors pass to the kid computers, I plan to get a pair of SSD's for some more raid 0 action. That should be a lot of fun. Of course the longer I wait, the cheaper the SSD's will get.
