Mysterious Computer Malfunction

I found this forum through google and decided that it may be able to solve my problems.

Basically, I have this computer which is getting quite old, although it still runs all the games and applications I want it to. It's specs are as follows:

512 DDR2 RAM
2.6Ghz Celeron Processor
Radeon Graphics card

Basically, in the past 3 days I've been experiencing really weird problems. As windows loaded my computer would turn off. When I turned it on a few more times, it would load furthur into windows then turn off. Eventually it stayed on and functioned correctly.

I want to avoid serious future problems so I'm wondering if anyone knows what's causing this. Hopefully it's just a corruped file in windows, as I have set up my harddrives so I can easily reinstall windows.

Thanks in advance.

lol i was messing around with a msn freezer program and got a virus which did the same thing

i used system restore once i managed to get the computer to boot properly

Update

Ok, I've determined this may not be a problem with Windows. Today, when I started my computer up, it pretty much went into a state of "hybernation", the machine was still running, although the monitor had no display. Then after a restart it loaded windows then sent into this "hybernation" mode. Then the third time it loaded up. I'm figuring it could be overheating, although it hasn't done this before and the fans are operating correctly.
