Mystery Computer.. Problem >.<

A friend gave me a desktop computer his dad didnt want anymore because it just didnt work, And it was made for him so It's not a brand name computer. The computer was in good shape to me, besides the harddrive being totally infected and nearly impossible to get formatted. My little brothers birthday was coming up, so I decided to fix it up and give it to him for his birthday. I bought a new Western 40g 7200rpm Hard drive for it, a CDROM drive for it since it was lacking one, and a Radeon 9600 Pro 128ddr Video Card knowing the mother board had a built in one, which is crap for gaming. Put it all together and the computer seemed to be fine. So after testing it, running games and all, the computer seemed great. So I shut it down, Windows shut down and everything, than it just left to a blue screen and wont fully shut down. The computer is still running.. but the hard drive seemed to have obviously shut down.. or at least the OS. So he's just been unplugging it when it gets to that point, because I can't figure out why it won't shut down. Now, he plays World of Warcraft mostly on this computer. Randomly, every 1-4 Hours, the computer completely shuts off and restarts. What's wrong? Does anybody have an idea what either of these problems could be? Motherboard problem? grrrrrrrrr!

the same thing happened to my computer. I think it might have to do with the programs that are on your computer. You have to thoroughly check the programs on your computer because some of them may contain viruses. After I ran my system restore disk, it deleted all those programs and my computer ran smooth. So try the following:

-removing unused programs or programs that take up alot of space
-doing a disk cleanup every couple days
-doing a disk defrag every couple days

tell me how it works out...

could be a cooling/overheating problem. how many fans are in the case?

Could possibly be the problem for the random restarts, there's only one case fan. The Video Card has it's own fan, and of course there's a fan for the processor :P

Well I used a brand new hard drive, and there's hardly any programs on it if not any that doesn't come on the windows disc, besides World of Warcraft, and this problem occurred the first time I ever tried shutting down the computer, So I would find it rather odd if I had a program with a virus/trojan on the computer. Although I was thinking, Could the motherboard be messed up? Because it seems the hard drive shuts down, or at least the windows part of it, but the mother board wont fully shut everything down. Thoughts?

so you think that the windows program is shut down but the motherboard is still trying to run on its own?... hmm it's a possibility...

are there any small errors that occur while ur using the computer such as programs closing, long delays, sounds, anything at all?

Actually yeah, The computer gives me alot of errors, Random long delays on loading a game or program, and the Wireless card doesnt work, I pretty much think the computer is retarded.

now the games you play on there... are they from CD-ROM's or are they downloaded from a website or are they just website games themselves?

He only plays World of Warcraft, It's obviously installed from the disc, but runs from an online server, I play it on my computer with no problem. Other than that he really doesn't play any games.

when the screen goes blue, do you still see the mouse on the screen, and/or can you use the alt+ctrl+delete method to bring up the task manager?

I would imagine that the Blue screen he's referring to is the one that gives you some long error message, and all you can do is restart. Nothing else works.

It's actually not an error screen, its simply the blue screen windows normally goes to before it fully shuts down. Once the 'windows shutting down' message box goes away, the computer moniter remains stuck at the blue screen, and the computer is still on (fans still going and all). There is no curser, you cannot CTRL + ALT + DELETE out of it, or anything to get out of the screen. All I can do is unplug the PS.
