mystery hard drive problem. Please somebody help.

Hi, I had a vista on my HP pavilion laptop and got some virus on it and sometimes when i turned it on it would never come up and had to restart it couple of times. but recently it didn't not come up at all that's why i format the operating system and also fdisk the hard drive and try to install the xp but then in the beginning of the installation (blue screen) it give me the 0*0000007B error that i have to check the chkdsk /f file and then i boot the computer again and do the procedure after typing chkdsk /f it gives me some info about the harddrive and it says that you can scan the larger area of the hard drive with scandisk procedure. after doing that the scan disk found something that can not be fixed according to itself.

"ScanDisk found physical damage on drive A that it cannot correct. "
"ScanDisk cannot repair damaged cluster 2 because other damage to drive A prevents it. "

now I have no operating system, and have a HDD with 300GB that the fdisk only detect 45 GB of it. Can't install vista becuase it is not NTFS and can't install xp because of this error.

Please give me a clear solution i really need my computer, its the middle of the semester, and I am Screwed.
 
Most likely all you have is a bad hard drive. Download the drive makers disk diagnostic utility and run it. You will have to burn the iso image to a cd and then boot to the cd to run it.
 
If you don't know the drive make, Seagate's Seatools will usually scan any hard drive. It's usually what I use first to try and scan them. Just use the bootable text-based version. You may have to disable AHCI in the bios to see the drive, too...
