Names of programming software

This might seem like a silly question, but does programming software have the same name as the language that it programs in?

I'm just curious in case I have to give examples of programming software in my exam.

well, what language are you programming in heres a few basic examples

VB - Microsoft Visual Basic 6
C++ - Dev-C++
C++ - Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0

is that the kinda thing you were aiming at or am i off key again.
