NAS drive selection

Hello all,

I'm looking to get a NAS drive with 8 to 12 TB but I am looking on the market and im getting boggled by the amount of NAS drives and can't come up with one to buy. Ive been looking at NAS drive that you can put 3 drives which i intend on putting 3 4Tb seagate drives but i dont know what to choose.

Personally I've had bad luck with Seagate drives and would recommend Western Digital Red 4TB drives since they are made for NAS.

I think beers has great knowledge about NAS storage systems if I remember correctly. Not sure if he's online right now.
 
I've got a Synology NAS (DS214se) and I have two WD Greens in there and they're running fine. However if you can afford it I'd go for WD Red drives in a Synology enclosure. The Synology NASes are fantastic, mainly because of the Synology DSM operating system they run which makes Synology NASes extremely versatile devices: https://www.synology.com/en-us/dsm/5.2

However, it looks like Synology don't have a 3-bay NAS so you might have to go with 2 bays or 4 bays if you want Synology. Maybe you could go 2 bay and get something like the DS214se I have or the newer DS215j and go with two WD Red 4TB disks.
 
I also have a Synology NAS (DS1513+), and used WD Red 4TB drives as they are highly recommended for a NAS running 24/7 over other types of drives. They are designed to run 24/7 and remain cool in enclosed space, versus Black drives which are designed for low utilization, high performance workstations which can run hot if used often, and versus Green drives which are designed for low power use, but not for constant activity.
 
+1 vote for Hitachi NAS 7200 RPM drives. Have mine in 4x 4TB Linux RAID5 with about 5600 hours on them, no errors or issues or anything.

Some transfer rates between single drive and the array :

Yeah if you're going Western Digital then the Red drives are recommended and they aren't much more expensive than the Greens if you are buying the disks new. I only went Green because I already had a 2TB Green and so it was cheaper to buy another 2TB Green to match it than two 2TB Reds. I recommend you go Western Digital Red for your disks and Synology for your enclosure.
