ok i know theres a how to install page on the download site. but i just dont understand what it says to do. I have ubuntu on my laptop and I am trying to get it ready to bring to school with me tomorow. but i cant seem to figure out how to get ndiswrapper installed properly. The only thing i know i did right is download the file and extract it. can anyone tell me what to do from there????Ive been trying to get this working for a few hours now.

thanks

Yes, to install you have to be root. sudo at the beginning of a command will allow you to go root and do that command at the same time. When it asks you for your password type the root user password. It will not show that you are typing but it will work.

Try typing this command "su root" ; it will ask you for password, enter the root user password.
once you are root type "apt-get install ndiswrapper

edit:
i tried the root.sudo and it also says command not found
I think you're misunderstanding me. The command is not "root.sudo" it is only "sudo" so again try typing "sudo apt-get install ndiswrapper" if the above does not work.

third option
you can also install in ubuntu with synaptic packet manager

i went into the packet manager and checked off all the ndiswrapper options. then it went on with the installing but then it asked me to put in my cd labeled ubuntu 7.04 or whatever. so i did. but it doesnt finish installing. the cd pops up and all just the installation doesnt finish.

you probably have to type Y during the install for "yes" you would like to continue the install and take up that x amount of space. Come to think of it now, I am damn sure ndiswrapper is already preinstalled with Ubuntu.

I also know that "sudo apt-get install ndiswrapper" will do just fine seeing as how it did ask you for your password. I would suggest trying that again if you. Remember it will not show you typing the root password.

ok i went back to terminal and did the sudo.... adn then typed my password pressed enter. it did a few things but then at the end it says E:Couldnt find package ndiswrapper.

what does this mean?? I have the ndiswrapper files on my computer

where is repositories?? and if i have it installed how come i cant connect to my wireless internet?? i dont even know how to search for my router or open up anything that has to do with wireless internet.

cameron, merely installing ndiswrapper will not make your wifi card start working. Ndiswrapper is the tool to install the driver for the card so that it works. There are many tutorials on the ubuntu forum that I'm sure would be of assistance to you. You can see if your wifi is working by typing the command "iwconfig" in a terminal and you should see your card as the wlan0 connection.

where is sources.lst?? or how do i get to that?

and thanks for all this help. this is my first week with ubuntu and everyone is talking to me like i should know even the basics. but i dont. this is like another language to me.

No offense or anything but it's probably better if don't tell you. Best not mess up your freshly installed Ubuntu. Anyway, I am brutally new to linux as well. I probably don't have more than a week's worth of experience. I hope you find the guide to help you with your wifi problem on ubuntu forum.
