Nec 3520a Dual DVD burner :)

I have the 3520. Do realize it uses the NEC D6364 chipset unlike its 3500 brethen (same chip as the Pioneer 109). Solid DVDburner and arguably best for its price bracket. The only other drive id consider reccomending is the PX716 but that uses the Sanyo chipset and is in a totally different price bracket

Thanx

Yeah and I am aware of the difference in the chipset used. I have also heard that in the pricerange at which it is being sold, it is the best. It has a good quality recording record with almost all DVD media.

Does your NEC 3520 run in DMA 4 mode?
No. Optical drives either run PIO Mode 4 or UDMA Mode 2 ... MOde4 would be ATA66 ... which is outside of the spec for optical drives (mine runes MOde2)

One question :)

Hey the transfer rate of a 16X burning process consumes a bandwidth of 21MB/s. Is the UDMA 2 mode enough for that? Just wondering, because I have read that some DVD burners of the newest generation require ATA66 to work at the fullest capacity? What's your view on that?

My plextor 716 w/ newest firmware runs in DMA 4 mode. It rips faster then my LiteOn 167T which is in DMA 2.

Nephilim thinks so it's able to burn at 16x speed w/ 16x media. Don't know why anyone would ever burn that fast, you would end up with coasters.

just out of curiosity ... what are you burning at 16x?

Lol

Thanx for all the extra info. I am never gonnna burn at 16X. I will stick with 8X max. Burning at top speeds (much like with 52X in CD-Rs) causes coasters or an abnormal amount of errors.

Is the 3500 bad? I got one these awile ago and still using it. It seems to have no problems. I have had very good luck with it. The only feature of it I have not tested yet is the double layor dvds. I only asking because every says the 3520 is much better it seems.

No No :)

The 3500 is an excellent burner. The only downside according to many reviews I have read regarding the 3500 is that it has difficulty reading scratched surface DVDs. However in burning, it performs really well. The 3520 is simply an improved version of the 3500 with a different chipset. BE HAPPY WITH YOUR 3500 :)

Sattisfied :)

LOL...got mine about 6 hours ago. Installed fine, copied one DVD onto the HDD in 10 mins. Burned in 5 minutes at 8X. Excellent copy :). What more could I wish for?

Hmmm... highschoolers? :P

UDMA2 is 33MB/s.

Where'd you read this?

Burning at top speeds (much like with 52X in CD-Rs)
Anything past 40X is questionable

Diffierent core logic chip so its not really a direct comparison ... the 3520 is a better drive however :)

Better pefrormance at EFM Mode ripping ... oh wait ... better would imply some ... ok "any" amount ofperformance for ripping EFM CDs :P (of course i know better that use my DVDburner for that but itd be nice to be able to heehee)

Man get it right, it's steroids!!!

No really though. It is running in DMA 4 and rips faster than the liton 167t.

lol ... and I finally got my Plextor rebate back :) ... so the drive only ran $99.99 .. still a few bucks ($25) more than the NEC drives (3520A)
