Need a good motherboard/cpu combo?

Need suggestions for a good board/cpu combo for a system I want to build. Wanting to be about 2 ghz but have some upgradabilty. System will be used for browsing, photos, spreadsheets and some games(light gaming). Any suggestions on any of the parts is welcomed as this will be my first build. Trying to upgrade from a 475 mhz, 8 g hd Compaq machine.
 
Well ... 2GHz ... upgradeability ... that would mean Athlon64 (unless you plan to OC the Pentium Ms heehee). What's the budget?
 
I wanted to try to keep a tower alone to around $500 if possible, but have not had much luck looking at the boards and cpus that I have seen. Wanting a cdrw and dvd drive in it otherwise just a basic 128 mb video card, 512 ram, and an 80gig hd was what I have been pricing at Newegg. Thought about going down in speed some if it would help in price but wanted a board that would allow me to go up later. Thanks.
