need a laptop on budget

I've been looking at laptops for college and I'm trying to decide between a mac or a pc. I've seen a new Dell Inspiron dual core on ebay for $680, but what can i get in a mac for within $100 of this? I was originally wanting a mac because I don't play games and hate getting viruses/popups/spyware etc.

If you looking dual core and want brand new your not going to find anything that price witht he performance heck I dont think you'll find anything for that price from mac brand new.
Ps. I'm typing this reply from a Dell Inspiron Dualcore and they dont disapoint.

I also had a Core Duo, it was the same as Dylan's except mine was a 2.0Ghz Core Duo, and it was a Dell Inspiron E1505. And i must say, it never dissapointed me, it just wasnt the best for games.

Well it also depends on weather u know the mac interface or the windows interface, As for viruses and stuff just keep your antivirus up to date.

The computer will be used for word processing, internet, IMs, and watching DVDs. I don't do any intense graphics stuff.

Amazon has a G4 ibook 1.33 ghz for $1000 + $100 rebate + $30 off for getting a visa + free shipping. So, $870 total. That is kinda out of my budget, but it may be worth it. I could probably sell it for $400-500 in a couple yrs, seeing as the old g3 500mhz are still fetching almost $300 on ebay.
