need a laptop

With your budget you have some definite leeway to work and configure. Are you figuring the tax is included within the budget?

I also agree with the i5 because unless he is doing some heavy demanding apps and tasks demanding an i7 the i5 will be more than enough processing power.

depends on the specs, i don't expect an i5 laptop to be more than 1200, plus he'll need the extended warranty because my nephew will most definitely be using this :D

the thing is he won't specify what he'll be running. at the moment he's using my NES for email & browsing internet, excel, word, flash games... that kind of stuff

but he wants it to last a long time.

i kind of liked the i5 460m, but am not so sure about what gpu to look for.

Take a look at Lenovo's ThinkPad W510. You can go online and configure as suits you, there is a free upgrade to 7 64-bit, as well as a few other configurations such as either i5 or i7.

As for the need for a full kb w/ numeric pad I couldn't tell you but a free online Chat session could easily answer this question.

If he is wanting a 7i and a really powerful laptop, I was recommended the ASUS brand by many on this forum. I had used their motherboards for years so I knew they were a trusted Mfg. I went to Best Buy this past Wednesday, and brought home a ASUS G73JH. I am really impressed with this laptop. Give it a look.;)

how easy is it to add blue tooth & blue ray player later???

i like the qosmio X505-Q882 for 1200.

I remember one forum member saying there is overheat problem for qosmio. You'd better google before you buy.

Asus G73JW-XT1 had Blu-ray & Bluetooth

You can easily add a USB bluetooth adapter and blueray player but this won't make your system so portable.

Either the HP Envy 17 inch or the 3D version

Envy 17

Envy 17 3D

These can be customized but might be a little outside of your budget.

i saw this one on newegg:
http://www.amazon.com/HP-ENVY-17-1010NR-17-3-Inch-Laptop/dp/B003L780M4

looks like it has everything we need. the thing is we wanted to buy locally because we also wanted best buy's advanced protection plan. like i said, this will be used by a 4yr old as well :)

I'm not sure if best buy's warranty will cover for the mayhem a 4 year old can cause.

sure it does:
for 200/2yr you get:
This includes repair costs for normal wear and tear, including defects in materials or
workmanship and failures due to dust, internal heat and humidity.

for 350/2yr, you get:
It happens sometimes. If you drop or spill on your laptop, netbook or tablet in the course of
normal use, we’ll cover the cost of your repair.

i know it's a lot of money, but i think it's worth it. for example, our printer accidentally got a hard piece of candy stuck in the paper feeder and now it prints all crooked. if we had bought the plan, we could have taken it in to bb and have them fix or replace it.

btw, i'm also looking at neweggs polices. they don't make perfect sense, but it's cheaper than BB's. and they have sweeter laptops.

ADH only covers operational or mechanical failure caused by an accident from handling and does not include protection against normal wear and tear, theft, misplacement, negligence, viruses, reckless, abusive, willful or intentional conduct associated with handling and use of the Product, cosmetic damage and/or other damage that does not affect the unit functionality, damage caused during shipment between You and Our service providers and any other limitations listed in the Limitations of Coverage section.

ok, so we narrowed it down to these 4, they all have BD player, BlueTooth, HDMI output. BTW, is max TDP related to how much power the cpu draws? for example, will an i7 with 45w max tdp use more power than a i5 with 35w?

VAIO VPCF136FM/B: 16.4", i7 740QM, GT 425M, 6G DDR3, 640GB@5400which may or may not be a bad thing, i'm thinking less power usage?? $1300 at BB

i like the sony vaio f series.

they have i7, bluray, 4gb ram 1333mhz, 1080p all for under 1200.

plus sony build quality is a big plus. not as bulky as other i7 computers either :)
