Need a Linux OS for SLOW computer

Ubuntu's a crowd favorite, Linux Mint, Fedora, openSUSE

Get another gig of ram and put XP on it.

damn small linux. its like 50mb, just the basics. runs on as little as 16mb ram.

Get ubuntu, it is the easiest and the one that as the most compatibility.

How much experience do you have with Linux? If you're new to it, Damn Small Linux might be a little confusing... really, though, Linux isn't that heavy, if you can get a little extra RAM it should easily handle just about any distro, it really comes down to preference. Ubuntu and Mint are considered the most newb-friendly ones around.

Ubuntu 8.04 ran fine with 256MB RAM when I last tried it, I don't know how much the requirements have gone up, but I think you should be alright.

I thought DSL's layout was kinda weird. Liked Puppy Linux though, on my older PIII system.

As the others have said, Puppy will run quite well on your system. Most of the other distro's will run ok but will be pretty slow with 256Mb ram.

I like Ubuntu 9.10 runs nice, you can also get the Netbook version. The Desktop version only takes up about 128mb of RAM idled.

I would go mint I have used it on a low spec system and it runs pretty good

DSL if it's REALLY slow. Puppy if it's slow but not terrible. And Ubuntu/Kubuntu if you add another 256MB of RAM.

use a stripped down Arch install with LXDE
