Need a PC Genius to help please :)

last Oct, my PC stopped working. I took it to the shop and they said that one of the fans had stopped working properly and the motherboard had overheated and they replaced the motherboard. Everything went ok until there other day I tried to put the sims 2 on it and it didnt auto run I went to my computer and it wasnt not recognising the disk drive so I restarted the computer. When it came on it had an error message that said that windows did not properly shut down and listed various reason why it could be and now it doesnt start at all it goes round in a loop of restarting. I have tried everything I can think of, restarting: normally, last config that worked, safe modes (all 3) etc. I dont have a windows rescue disk and have brought a boot disk for xp off of ebay but this was absolutley useless. Do you know anything I can try, anyone please  :)

Sounds like it could be trying to boot from the wrong place. When i reconfigured my drivers the other day my Bios decided to switch and try to boot from my CD drive for no apparent reason. Try going into your bios (Delete or F10 at startup) and setting the primary boot location to HDD-0 or whatever it is. Might work.

Are you running windows XP? Or 2000? If boot to the disk(this will also show if your drive's good) When you get there, get to the point where it checks for installed versions of windows. You should have a repair option listed. Run this, finish the setup, and see if that fixes it.

Hiya, I have 2 installed windows xp's one was from the previously installed ( before it was put into the shop) and the other it the one I usually select to start up both do not work.

Thanks,

Liz:)

Try flashing the CMOS
Leave it on the pins 2 & 3 for about 10seconds, switch it back to 1 & 2
Then "hold" your power button util it starts up and shuts down
Wait for a bit, another 10 seconds, then turn on the pc

When Windows loops when it tries to boot it is pretty much always a driver problem. You have to go into safe mode and establish which driver has gone corrupt and reinstall it. It sounds like your harddrive controller driver has gone funky on you, but that is just a guess.

The chance is small that it could be the RAM, but my bet is on the drivers.

Hi, it wont open in safe mode either, so cant go in to see whats up from there.

- soz I really dont understand -how you go about doing this? how do you get to CMOS? :o

Thanks for your help guys

This is basicaly resetting your bios...there is another way to do this if you dont understand these instructions.

Take the cover off your case> On your motherboard you will see a battery, it's round and silver looks like a big watch battery. Unplug your PC> Take out the battery> Hold your power button down for 30 seconds> Replace battery> Plug computer back in and see what happens.

hmm I had that error before, ended up reinstaling windows all together. Try putting another harddrive into the computer and install windows on it. Then rescue some data off the other drive, and then try reinstalling windows.

Hi, I took out the battery and waited 30 secs, switched it on and its still in a loop.

Gonna get another hard drive off ebay, should do the trick, if not well at least I tried (with all your help) and I shall take great pleasure in destroying that thing :D if this doesnt work.

Big Thanks for all your help
