need a recommendation

Most people will probably recommend AVG or Avast!. I use Antivir. It works really well and has a desirable interface. You can get that here. PCWorld actually chose it over both the other free applications.

If you're looking to purchase something, my only advise would be dont get Windows Live OneCare. I have it and am really displeased with it. I think the freeware is actually better.

thank you dragon dude. seems like most people in this forum either dont know about it or dont recognize it as legit.

Thanks a whole lot for the help, everyone. I have MacAfee VirusScan Enterprise, but my friend's computer is loaded with viruses and malware, and he was wanting me to come over and help him out. I think I'll try all 3 of the programs you guys recommended, just in case one or two of them misses something (I've been told that sometimes if a computer is infected by a large range of different things, it's best to do a sweep with a few different programs).

Well actually the best way is to reformat but if he has important work and hasn't backup anything then you can just ignore what I said about reformatting.

Well, thanks again, everyone, you guys were really helpful. I used either the Avira Antivir or the Avast program first, and whatever one it was worked ok, but I used AVG second, and I liked it better.

It found 526 threats, none of which were mislabeled or even slightly ambiguous as to whether they were malware or not. My neighbor was just fortunate that he only had dial-up, or the malware/trojans/etc. would have spread even worse.
