Need advice on buying very first laptop

My best friend and I are going to purchase jointly our very first home computer and we've decided on buying a laptop. She wants to use it to surf the web and do a small amount of word processing and I want to use it to manage my iPod and iTunes. That's about all we want to do with the thing.It will reside at her house as she's the web surfer.

Can you give me some advice on what to look for in a laptop? We're not into much of anything except web surfing and iPod so extra bells and whistles are just not necessary. We are both also complete and total computer idiots so speak...to...me...very...slowly. Thanks so much in advance.

Id recommend you get a fairly cheap laptop maybe with a bit extra RAM.

one advice I say is make sure you get 512 ram. windows xp and 256 ram do not mix well.

Thanks I been VERY happy with it. I had it for almost a mounth now and it plays every game I throw at it perfectly.

if ur rich/have alot to spend on an laptop, go for the ibook, but if u can't afford it go for a laptop, dons't matter which make, coz personally i think they're all good {dell, hp, IBM, gateway, Toshiba, etc}, that has at least 512 mb ram,a ok cpu {centreno or sumem} and a fairly big hard drive, 60 gig or more for your ipod tunes..!!!
