Need advice on hard drive situation

I have an external western digital 120GB hard drive which has a problem.

When I plug it in the drive it starts to spin and clicks three times. After the third click the drive stops spinning and does nothing.

The computer makes the little chime to recognize it has been plugged in but of course nothing pops up in mycomputer. I'm pretty sure it is dead and my question is what if anything can I do (software, data recovery service, etc)

Thanks for your assistance.

Once a hard drive starts making physical noises, there's not much you can do I'm afraid. You could try another enclosure or running the drive internally to double check it's not the enclosure, but it sounds like the drive has simply gone bad.

About all that's left is a platter swap, or something along the lines of what the expensive data recovery places do...

I am afraid that is probably what the case is. So is there a recommendation of data recovery services and has anyone gone through that process?

I've never taken a drive to have it recovered, but realize it's a few hundred dollars for about any service. I was trying to help someone locally and he was talking about being charged around $500 for a couple files...
