Need advise please!!! Custom Build vs Brand Name (Fixed Link)

Hello Everyone,

I Dont know much when it comes too computers and Im in need of a new one. Im mostly going to play games. I have my eye on this PC from gate way. A close friend of mine who says he can build me a better one that can out perform it.

Well im not sure soo I need your help please?

Gateway PC: http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/prod...spx?path=2f9c8cec5d5e2da2ee557f6867b6e88aen02

TOTAL: 814

- VS -

Custom PC:
AMD Phenom II X4 945 3.0GHz, 8Mb Cache..............................169.99

Corsair DDR3, 1800MHz 4GB 2x240 DIMM, Unbuffered, 8-8-8-24, XMS3 DOMINATOR with DHX - AMD Phenom II, BEMP Support...............154.99

Seagate Barracuda (ST3500418AS) 7200.12 SATA 3.0Gb/s 500GB 16MB Cache (OEM)............................................. ...................................45.99

HIS H577QT1GD Radeon HD 5770 IceQ 5 Turbo Video Card - 1GB GDDR5, PCI-Express 2.0, CrossFireX Ready.........................................220. 00

Cooler Master Silent Pro M700 Modular 700W Power Supply.........109.99

Asus M4A79XTD EVO Socket AM3 AMD 790X Chipset + ATI SB750 Dual-Channel DDR3 1800(O.C.)........................................ ........102.99

TOTAL: 803.95

Im still debating because the gateway PC got A WHOPPING 8 GB OF RAMM!! How can that not out perform the custom built one? Plus wouldnt gateway be more reliable then the custom?

I want to believe my friend but i have a feeling that gateway is much more reliable then my friend's custom built. Can the gateway PC's play all of the modern games? Lets take COD- Modern Warfare 2 can the gateway play with max settings? Or Im i better going off with the cheaper friends custom built. I want my PC to last too.

Please advise me on what i should do from here on.

MANY THANKS,

Stephan

PS- 8 GB OF RAMMM HOLY SMOKERS!

The link to the gateway pc doesn't work, but 99 percent of the time, a custom built computer will be better than a store bought computer. Fix the link and we'll know more.

Thanks I just updated Link sorry about that

My main concern is still the 8GB of ram of the gateway PC. Now im not a computer techie but 8 is sure a lot better then 4 right?

Please I know some of my questions or thinking might be stupid to some of you but im not really sure. He has been a close family friend of mine ever since I was a kid and I want to believe him but I also want others opinion, to me 8 GB is sure a lot better then 4GB of ram.

I just want to make a wise decision

I also have a FIRM budget of 800

MANY THANKS

Stephan

The gateway only has 6gb of memory. Here are the comparisons

gateway

Memory 6gb
video hd5570
psu 300 watt
cpu I5 3.2ghz dual core 4mb cache
HDD 1 tb
warranty 1 year

custom built

memory 4gb
video hd5770
psu 700 watt
cpu phenom quad core 3ghz 8mb cache
hdd 500gb
warranty balance of manufacturers warranty on individual parts.

I myself would go with the custom built as it as better parts. The biggest difference would be the cpu as the I5 is only a dual core and the phenom is a quad core and the quad core having 4mb more cache. Plus the custom build has a better video card and power supply. You might need more hard drive space but depending on what you do, you might not need to, and hard drives are cheap now. I wouldn't trust that gateway on a 300 watt power supply.

My vote is for the custom built.

Custom build FTW, the GPU will give you much better frame rates in games than the one above it ^^^ :good:
