hello my fellow forum friends. im kind of confused on psu requirements and what to get. i have been reading alot on here about peoples opinions on what psu specs mean, and would like some good solid advice. in my systme in my sig, i have a ultra lsp 750w psu w/ a single 40amp rail. is this good for my systme or am i pushing it, and is this psu of good quality?...next, i am wanting to build another pc with the following specs...intel e5300, 8800gt, 4gigs of ddr2 800 ram, 1x250 hd, 1x1tb hd, 1xdvd burner, a multi card reader, 2x80mm fans and 1x 120mm fan. this wont be for games, but mailnly for movies and general usage, hooked up to a 32in tv. i have most parts but need to decide on a power supply to run it. i would like to keep it under $50 tops. i know its a low budget for a psu, but i dont see this build using too much. any advice would help, and sites like newegg or tigerdirect are a must. thanks again

i think the first rail is for CPU and molex connections, where the second one is for the PCI-E cable. some PSU's have more rails (3 or 4) and the first is specifically for the CPU, the others are divided between molex and pci-e connections.

I'm no expert on PSU's, i can only point you in the right direction.

your PSU isnt that great...

To put in into perspective, My corsair 750W has 60A on the SINGLE 12v rail

I would say, rather get a Corsair or PCP & C Silencer

Anything above 500w is good

(i bought a 750W for future expandability...)

Ultra is a 50/50 power supply, not one of the best or the worse. It should be fine on your system.

The other system, if your wanting one under 50 bucks.

Or a Stable power for 50.

i see that many have 2 12 volt rails. how are these handled?...if my cpu draws say 12 amps from the 1 rail then does the rest go for the rest of the systme say to the gpu through the pci-e slot and the other rail handle the difference, or is the remaining amperage on the rail for my cpu just not utilized at all...i was looking at this one...http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171046

Forget that PSU and pretty much all the others.

Read here why, regarding the rails and that PSU http://www.computerforum.com/167205-quick-question-3.html#post1392744

Get this:
Corsair 400W for $40 after rebate ($54 before). Much better than any of the crap listed above but will power your new system no worries. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16817139008

I would also recommend a new PSU for your existing system as the current one is shit.

and also, whats wrong with the psu i have in my sig? what about it is S@#*? i thought it was a pretty descent one, i mean it powers my systme very well, i can overclock my cpu and gpu no problems, it doesnt get hot it actualy runs pretty cool, and i only paid $50 on black friday when normaly it was $100 or so...im confused as to what makes a power supply crap as to good, like what specs do i look at to determine this?...thank you again, and if anyone can give some feed back on the case n psu combo i posted i would appreciate it.

36A is loads for the intended new system. 30A is too. I would steer clear from recertified anything and stick to quality. That is where the current CPU falls down btw.

The Corsair will provide the 30A, plus maximum quality, 5 year warranty etc for $40.

alright so i think i am going to just put thie ultra lsp 750w that im currently using in my sig (40 amps) in the second build, this should be more than enough for that and allow some expandability for the future, and just get a different one for the rig in my sig, so if you would please give me some links for a solid psu that is minimum 600w and privides good amperage for all my components, my budget would be around $50-$75 i know it will be tough but surly there must be something out there that is good for that price...any suggestions are more than welcome

that looks good, but it seems to be a bit on the high side. can anyone tell me what is wrong with the one i am currently using for my rig in my sig?...is it cutting it close on the amps, or is it not reliable, or what?...ive read reviews about it and no body had anything badto say about it. but i dont know, people here seem to think its junk, but nobody wants to say why....is this opinion based on personal preference and biasness?...please explain

That Ultra PSU is a rebadged WinTech PSU which make absolute garbage. Yeah all the specs look good, but it has low quality capacitors and build quality, 25oC MTFB rating, non-double ball bearing fan etc etc.

It will work, however, that brand is prone to failure, and unfortunately, when it does it is likely to take out other components, such as memory and CPU.

I would suggest getting a good quality 450W PSU from Corsair for your current build and use the old PSU for the new (lower power requirement) build.

Definately get a good Corsair, OCZ, PCP&C, Thermaltake, Seasonic or other good brand psu. and there's nothing wrong with recertified PSU's, they have to meet the exact same standards or they are scrapped.

do you really think a 450w corsair will power my systme?...i would like to be able to add to my systme in the future like add a hd or 2 and a blueray player, with a front panel card reader and fan controler and maybe a f_panel lcd display...i was thinking of this one...

is this pretty good and would i need to worry about it failing and hurting my other components, like my ultra lsp 750w psu. thanks for the opinions
