Need File Transfer Utility For Programs Transfer

I am upgrading to a new bare bones computer and would like the transfer between computers to be as easy as possible. I would like to copy all my existing programs, folders, Windows Doc. Folders, Windows Profiles, ... etc. to my new hard drive. Of course I want all my programs associated in my new registry as well. Is there a utility, of reasonably cost, out there that can do this????

You can't backup your programs like that, all programs will have to be re-installed. As far as files go, you could burn them to cd/dvd or use a thumb drive, crossover cable to transfer them. If your using windows xp, there a tool to transfer your user setting to another computer I think.

Hi!

In my opinion the best way is to create your drive clone using imaging software (like Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost). I prefer True Image (don't like Semantec products for some reason), besides it is $20 cheaper.

So, to create disc clone (I say about TI correspondingly) you need to connect your new drive to computer with the old one, run the program and choose appropriate option. It will transfer information by copying the partitions to another hard disc.
It seems once it cloned my 40GB HDD in 10 minutes.

So in this way you'll have new hard drive with old OS and partitions without loosing information.

There's a problem with Norton Ghost however. Here at work we did the same thing. We have 3 types of machines here in the office, Dell Dimension 2400, Dell Optiplex 170L, and some PowerSpec machines. Our first ghost image came from the 2400, and we were going to throw the image onto a 170L. The image didn't work, even after multiple attempts because the machines aren't compatible. Before you go to do anything, test it.

yes the file transfer utility thingamabob (i dont know the exact name of it and im not on an XP computer now) i think it may transfer programs too... the easiest way in my opinion is to set your old hard drive as a slave to the new one and just transfer, it would have a very fast interface and its so easy.
