I am building a new system and I need help choosing a new hard drive for it. I have built a few systems but they have been low end systems and I have always just used cheap hard drives. Could someone give me some suggestions on what to go with. Here is what I have ordered for the system so far,

ABIT IP35 Pro

Q6600 cpu
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115017

OCZ Platinum Edition 4GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...bEdition+4GB

BFG GeForce 8800GTS
http://shop3.outpost.com/product/547...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG

Tuniq Tower 120 Cooler
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16835154001

The system will be used mainly used for gaming, Battlefield 2, Frontlines, and Nr2003. I would like something pretty quiet but it really is no big deal.

Thanks for any help.

That will depend mainly on how large a drive you are looking for as well as type. Do you want ide, sata, or even a Raptor model? The specs on that model board show 6 sata ports there suggesting sata or a Reptor drive would be preferred.

A 160gb WD Caviar RE sata model is seen for $59.99 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136062

WD Raptor drives see quite a bit more for the price on those. Try $94.99 for a 36gb model. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136054

When it comes to what kind of hard drive I want I am not sure. I really don't know what the difference in them are. I would like one around 150GB I want it to be pretty fast.

Which only goes to show the higher price tags seen on the Raptor models overall. With a board that sees 6 sata ports your best option would be a sata model where there won't be any fuss with how you plug the drive in as master or slave along with an ide optical drive. Those are also seen in sata models as well.

Which version of Windows are you planning to run XP ro Vista? The first link for the board you selected apparently was in your shopping cart. The link here is for the product page itself at newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813127030

I see they dropped the 500gb model down another $5 there. That had been $104.99 for a good period of time. Bssides the price range the amount of drive capacity needed will be the thought there.

Since a high price is out the Raptors would seem to be out as well as any large capacity models. lee42lee will have to decide on that however.

how come Raptors are so expensive? Arent there other 10000 rpm hdd's which are much cheaper

WD is not the only brand seeing 10,000rpm drives like the Raptor line there. The price is higher since those run at 10,000rpm compared to the average 7,200 or even slower 5,400rpm models. Seagate has their own Cheetah 73gb model. http://www.jaztechnologies.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=36_42_90&products_id=234

Others and even much older SCSI drives are available while requiring a separate controller card for those. http://shopping.yahoo.com/p:Sun%20Microsystems%209.1%20Gbyte%2010000rpm%20Ultrascsi%20Hard%20Disk%20Hard%20Drive:1990487135;_ylc=X3oDMTB0OXA5YnR2BF9TAzk2NjMyOTA3BHNlYwNmZWVkBHNsawNjb21w

I initially had a raptor OS drive.. it was fast.. then it started clicking :-) So.. i replaced it with a 500GB and its been great ever since. I like the idea of the raptors but personally i think if you're looking for performance drives I would get a small SSD and be done with it.

Western Digital has a new 640GB drive thats getting great reviews -its suposed to be as fast as a Raptor but with a ton of storage (640GB). New Egg has then for $130 --> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136218
