need help about vista

well i bought a computer about 6 months ago and came with no software or anything, besides the windows anytime upgrade disc. so i figured i could use to re install a fresh copy of windows. i quess i was wrong because the key on my comp dosent seem to work. can you not do that or what? :confused:
 
The newer systems see the automatic system restore feature for the preinstalled versions of XP and Vista alike. A recovery disk is generally one that works along with the hidden restoration files stored on the hard drive for seeing the factory defaults restored on that one machine only.

OEM disks for system builders are full install disks without the large paperback book on the particular version and edition of Windows and the retail carton. For Vista those are shipped in a plastic box with a small booklet only.

Besides referring to the support site for information the keyboard itself may need replacement if the assigned key or key combination isn't working at all. That's the problem with preinstalled OSs.
 
In case you were looking for the right answer, the key on your computer is only good for that particular version. To upgrade to a different version using the anytime disk you have to buy a key for that particular version.
 
In case you were looking for the actual answer look over the manufacturer's support site for the system there in case the preinstalled copy of Windows there was incomplete. Their faq section should have something on what to do when the automatic restore feature fails to work like it should.

i smell beef lol...

. its illegal to do so, but what i did several times was just call up the number and tell them u had to change out the mobo or something, and they'll giv ya a key.

The key that u get on the sticker of genuinity on ur machine when bought, is a SPECIALLY coded key which was formed by taking the serial nmbers of the parts in ur maachine, and putting them though a mathematical formula. That is why usually when u add more ram or something u need to reactivate.

A restore feature is not the same as an Anytime Upgrade disk. The restore feature uses the manufacturer provided software to restore the machine back to factory state. An Anytime Upgrade disk is used to upgrade the version that came on your computer to a higher version... ie upgrade Vista Home Basic to Premium or Ultimate.

What some of our less knowledgable contributors haven't clued into is that the OP is posting about something completely different than what our honourable responder is rambling on about.

A Home Basic Key will not work in any other version of Vista, nor will a Premium, Ultimate or any other key. In order to install the version (thus upgrade your current version) you need to purchase a valid key for that version.
 
What some people seem to leave out is finding out why the automatic restore feature isn't working in the first place when going to use the manufacturer's assigned key or key combination. That would assuming you were hoping to save the current installation and not changing to another version or edition of Windows.

The make and model system would be helpful here for looking up the troubleshooting information. It may be only a minor bug that you have to see fixed there.
 
That would be because he didn't say the manufacturer restore wasn't working. He said they didn't provide one, so he used the Anytime Upgrade disk instead. He probably didn't realize that he could push a key on boot to load the recovery partition.
