Need help building a cheap mid-range computer!

Hello everyone, let me start off by saying I am in no terms good at building computers, or good at computers in general. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not entirely clueless I know a bit here and there, but I digress. I need help on full build for decent a computer (obviously), or a decent readily assembled computer. Something mid-range, good for gaming rig. Of course not amazing but can run games around 30ish+ fps. (mind you my computer now runs WoW at 5-15 fps on all low settings, it's that bad and It's getting worse) My price range is around 600-650 and any help is appreciated. As to what you might find, please give me a short explanation as to why you would chose this, just for clarity's sake. I thank you all very much for the help and I trust your decisions.

Just make sure you adhere to the following simple top down guide:

Case
Motherboard
CPU
Video Card (Optional)
Memory
HDD
Optical Drive
Operating System

Roughly off the top of my head:

Case - Spend about $50
Motherboard - Spend about $80
CPU - Try for a Core i3-3220 ($120ish)
Video Card (Optional) - GTX 650 ($140ish)
Memory - 8GB DDR3 - $40?
HDD - 320-500GB WD Blue/Green - $75?
Optical Drive - Anything $20
Operating System - Windows 8 - $90

What's that around 615?
 
Is the current computer worth keeping whole? What computer is it? Or could hard drive/optical drive be used, maybe? Reason I ask is because after Windows, which you can get today for 80 then goes back up to 100, doesn't leave much for the rest of the tower and those 2 parts would save as much as the os costs.
 
It's a Compaq Presario, made in '08. It's got a single core AMD athlon LE-1640, Nvidia GeForce 6150 Se, 250GB HDD, Standard DVD/CD drive, and a new corsair 450W power supply. Honestly the Power supply would be the only one worth keeping, and possibly the CD/DVD drive. Other so As a whole, not really. Except for the two aforementioned items.

You have a triple channel kit of memory here and your motherboard selection only has 2 DDR3 banks. Change your memory selection to a 16GB kit (2x8GB). Corsair Vengeance is quality. Windows 7 is great. If you buy now, you can get a Windows 8 Pro upgrade for 15 bucks and then just hang on to it. For a DIY project this is definitely a good little set up you have. I would consider bumping your PSU up because the 650 ti chipset wants 225W and will require external power (6 PIN most likely)

Alright, I changed around a few things and got the parts I need, what do you think now? Would this all work together?

Coolmax is junk. That board is really low end too. And you've got yourself all the way down to a Pentium. Better off using the hdd and od from the old computer. Or saving up some more $.

Alright, thanks man I'll look into those. I'll definitely consider keeping the HDD. I'll probably just end up wiping it and starting anew. It's not a problem for me. Thank you so much for the advice, I'll try to allocate some spare funds for this :)
