Knowing I7 may be better then PhenomII and I don't exactly need 8 gigs, i'm fine with the processor (because I can save a good chunk of money)(No i don't live close to a Micro Center) and I'm planning on the future for possible ram update/CPU update (I don't want to put in 6 gigs and have to replace it, I'd rather add to it instead) What do you think about this set up, will it work well?

what is your total budget and what are you looking to do with it? if games, which ones and at what settings (preferably)?

right now i can say you don't need 16 gb of ram. depending on which motherboard you end up getting, you need either 6gb or 4gb (3x2gb or 2x2gb, respectively).

I forgot to mention that bit of information. I'm building this machine to play FFXIV with out any problems/lag (as well as any older games, watching movies, music, etc). This far exceeds the recommended configurations for FFXIV however I also wanted it to last a few years. I really do not want to pay much more then $2,300.

I see alot of waste in that setup....If your gonna spend $489 on a GPU, i wouldnt waste it on a 5870, i'd go for a GTX480. For gaming, the i7 930 is a much better choice than the Phenom II X6. That power supply has pretty poor ripple suppression as well. That much memory is a complete waste, you are better off with a smaller amount of faster memory. This is what i would do at that price point:

Case+Mobo:

CPU:

Memory:

GPU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130552

PSU: 850W will handle pretty much anything up two twin GTX480's.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207001

ODD: If you absolutely need a Bluray Burner/Reader...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136181

Now, as far as display is concerned, i would personally rather have a smaller display with better color quality, such as one of these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824001389
Otherwise, that asus is a pretty decent display.

So help me understand because I haven't built a computer since highschool and there wasn't any quad core or 6core back then(probably not even Dual core). How is that quad core you mentioned at 2.8 GHZ better then the 6core at 3.2GHZ?

The i7 920 is faster per clock(Depending on how long its been since youve built a computer, think Pentium 4 vs Athlon, except with the roles switched now), the Phenom II X6 is only faster under heavily multithreaded applications such as video rendering. For usage in gaming, the i7 920 is still the best option.

AMD its usually for a budget, and intel for pure performance. Honestly Im kind off hangover but it has tot do with something like hyper threading.

Like if a v6 beats a v8 because its turbo charged. Wait for a better explanation tho lol

Ok what about this setup below (Remember I want this to last up to 3-4 Years if possible).

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...4&cm_re=8_gb_ddr3_1600-_-20-231-314-_-Product

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...Deals-_-na-_-na&AID=10521304&PID=3952373&SID= (The 5970 looks better by dosn't have HDMI, what do you think?)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103727&cm_re=amd_x4-_-19-103-727-_-Product (I read this is almost as good as the I7 930 only $100 dollars less!)

I'm assuming the power supply you suggested will work with this. I know hardly anything about motherboards and I didn't really look for a case, maybe there is a combo deal?

Let me know what you think about this!

That depends on where you buy your i7-930. I got mine for $215 after taxes at a Microcenter, where that price is still current. I don't know if you live near one though. (edit: That is an in-store price, they won't ship them)

4GB Dimms of memory are a waste of money.

The 965 doesnt come close to the i7 930 as far as processing power. As the above poster said, microcenter has i7 930's for $199 if you have one close.

the hd 5970s usually come with adapters.

i'd go with 4 gb of ram and put the extra money towards a better motherboard, something with an 8xx chipset. are you for sure going with amd?

Hey Joh,

If I could find a stick of 4GB ram I would go for it the trouble is if one day I want to upgrade the ram I don't want to have to waste the 2 x 2gb ram to fit the rest.

I know hardly anything about Mother Boards so help me out!

I figured saving money going with AMD wasn't such a bad idea, it dosn't look like to many people are unhappy with Phenom IIx4. Any other reason why it isn't such a good idea (I've never used AMD before)?

well you have 4 sticks of 2gb right now, so why not just get 2 stick and, down the road, if you decide it isn't enough (which shouldn't be for a while) you can always just get another 2 sticks.

depending on the game, you could see more fps with an intel cpu. it is up to you, but going intel with a good budget isn't a bad idea. i'd go with the i7-930 and RAM bomber linked. i'd maybe look at this motherboard:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128423
it has udb 3.0 and sata 6 gb/s.

Is the difference because of the Hyper Threading I7 930 offers? Is it a BIG difference? ATM i'm building this to play FFXIV when it comes out in Sept. however I want it to be good for later games as well however this should handle FFXIV with ease. The one thing i'm trying to get away from is the money it cost to buy intel products but if that's what it takes I guess i'll run with it again. Just in case I change my mind again, any good AMD compatible mother boards in mind? Any additional suggestions? I'm ready to buy this thing and build it!
