I'm lookin at buyin a computer soon. I want an AMD proc too. But i've always used intel in the past. I'm not sure what a good one to get would be. Same for the mobo. I've got about a $500 limit, but i dont need any cd players or hard drives. For the mobo just to make it easier i really want integrated sound and lan. Any suggestions?

"but i dont need any cd players or hard drives"

How are going to run a computer without a hard rive ?

If you already have your hard drive and rom drives, here's what I would go with (all prices are shipped from newegg.com):

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3000BPBOX - $146

GIGABYTE GA-K8NS Ultra-939 Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce3 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard - $80.50

CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Dual Channel Kit - $82.82

ASUS N6600/TD/128 Geforce 6600 128MB DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail - $130 (for some weird reason I really like ASUS video cards :D )

Leaves about 60 bucks for a decent case... and maybe if your lucky a good PSU will come with it... if not, then step down on the gpu or even the motherboard... of course, all this is assuming that you have a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and the like...

*Newegg did have a couple of the items above on sale when I posted this, but I don't think the prices will change very much*

Integrated stuff is basically standard anymore, so you dont have to worry about that... I'd suggest just doing a search on places like newegg and see if they have any good deals or clearace items.

a lot of amd motherboards don't have integrated video.

whats the purpose of this computer? do you game or just surf the net?

ya, its a gaming pc, i'm buying one for my dad but hoping that i can take some of his newer parts and give him my older ones cuz he'll never need anything very good. I have a fx5600 xt, ecs 648fx-a mobo and a 3.0ghz proc. Still a decent setup but i wanted to switch to amd for games. and i got plenty of optical drives and hard drives layin around.

While the X300 can *play* games... you wont have a good time. It may be worth dropping the mobo to NF4 and getting a higher VC. (or even to NF3U and a 9600Pro)

I personally I think they should stick with Longhorn. Vista sounds too femenine. It could be the woman's edition. Longhorn is manly!!!!
