OK I am planing on buying a domain name(first time) from GoDaddy.com,
now I have a question, which "Server Operating System" should I get Linux or Windows?

Are you planning on scripting with PHP or ASP.NET? ... Are you going to be incorperating Perl or Java? ... On their hosting plans page, GoDaddy shows you what Windows and Linux supports.. check it out.

I did, and I'm not sure what I want  :o

SFR I'm very new to HTML and know nothing about java, could you give me a push in a good direction of what I should choose, maybe what is the most common, or what would you use, or may what you think I would be best off getting.

Tanks :)

Well, if you are new to web hosting get windows, if you are a fairly good computer user then get linux.

windows is better if your just starting out on HTML, plus, me being a web designer myself, i recommend getting to know java because you'll want it sometime

It is very different than a windows computer.

you don't get it! don't say another word! :P (though still, don't say another word!)

SFR if I want to run a page powered be vBulletin (like this forum) should I get Linux?

I would definatly get Linux for the PHP support, definatly take linux. I bet after html you'll be using php its what most people go for next, I would also go for something else then godaddy, yes they are cheap, but 2 out of the 4 times i did a domain though them, they messed somehting up, even once including me and someone else trying to regidster thre same domain at a close time peroid and them not being able to figure out who registered it first and who gets it.

and yes for most forums you'll want linux, beucase to my understading windows doesn';t support pho only asp.net, and most forums PHPbb, VB, IPB all run from PHP.

Thats why I said to my understanding, just other people dont always understand, that I barly understand :P

I have a question though, I have seens hosting plans and alot there are two plans one with linux and one with windows, I always see PHP support under linux...and asap under windows, and never the other way around, why is that?

Well PHP comes as a standard feature in most linux distros. It is an additional option on Windows.

As for ASP.NET this is part of Microsoft's Visual Studio .NET (ASP is its predecessor and part of VS 6.0) and which can be run on LINUX but extremely rare. Visual Studio .NET is an application that allows programmers create and also to combine Visual Basic.NET, C#.NET, J#.NET, ASP.NET, ADO.NET, C/visual C++ (also MFC applications and activeX control), and more....

Hosting sites are going to do what is easiest and the cheapest... that is why most of the time PHP is on Linux and ASP & ASP.NET are on Windows boxes.

Most of the hosting packages use linux, windows in terms of hosting is like using netscape to browse when it's been overtaken with internet explorer and now firefox.
