Need help buying dedicated media computer!

I'm looking to buy a computer (laptop, desktop, netbook unimportant) that I can keep permanently connected to my 42in Plasma TV. I'll solely use it for watching Hulu and downloaded movies on the big screen. Video quality is of course important on this, but I'm not nearly as picky as many are and think that most pictures are fine (i.e. I bought 720p tv.) Besides these requirements, I'm just looking to pay as little as possible!

I really need help with this though, as I haven't done much computer shopping in my day and don't know what technical requirements I should be looking for.

1) What is your budget?
Can afford anything, but trying to save money. Frugalness is a priority.
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
Unimportant
3) Where will you buying this notebook?
USA
4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
b. Dislike: Apple
5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistrubited?
No
6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?
I want to use it as a dedicated media laptop hooked up to my 42in plasma tv. It will serve no other function.
7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?
It will never move.
8) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games or types of games?
No.
9) How many hours of battery life do you need?
Unimportant.
10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?
Online is ok.
11) What OS do you prefer? Windows (XP or Vista or Windows 7), Mac OS, Linux, etc.
Windows.
12) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?
Unimportant, it will always be displaying through the tv.
13) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen?
Always displayed through tv.
14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
No
15) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last?
Buying ASAP, prefer long-lasting
16) How much hard drive space do you need; 80GB to 500GB? Do you want a SSD drive?
Unimportant, I can always do external storage for pretty cheap.
17) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a CDRW/DVD-ROM, DVD Burner or Blu-Ray drive?
No

Please state any additional features you need. It's also helpful if you can indicate how experienced you are with computers. If you're a novice and don't know much, that's alright. Everyone's a novice at some point.

I'd like it to hook up via hdmi.

ummmm....

You would be best off building a computer to use for this, a laptop would perform poorly as a htpc. here is a pc the BOMBERBOYSK put together. i claim no credit for it, give it all to him. but this would be a good computer to suit you needs.

Right now more than 4gb is not worth the price, and by the time you need more memory the prices will have dropped significantly on ddr3. DIMM slots are for memory, most amd motherboards will have four DIMM slots(enough to add another two sticks of memory down the road)

Also, as far as gpu's are concerned, the video memory(1gb/512mb/256mb/etc) is not what measures performance, but the actual computing power of the chip itself(eg- a 512mb 9800gtx will beat out a 1gb 9600gt).
