need help choosing CPU

The AMD Athlon X2 4200+ is far superior, but is also alot more money.

The 4200+ costs around $370, wheres the Pentium D 930 only costs around $190.

get the opteron 165. lol
the X2 3800+ is better than the 930 at stock speeds. the 940 is on par with the X2 3800+ except for gaming.. X2 3800+ wins in gaming benches.

i know that... the X2 3800+ is worse than the 4200+ obviously.. and the X2 3800+ is better (in some apps) than the 940... which is obviously better than the 930. i wasn't disagreeing with you lol
i still like the opteron chips better.

I know you weren't, it just sounded like you were talking only about the 3800.

What i dont get is, why are you comparing a $370 AMD to a $190 Intel CPU?

lol who said i was?
btw the 930 is $199...
not to mention the X2 3800+ is better than it in almost any app.. and the X2 3800+ is more like $297 not $370 :)
in fact the X2 4200+ is less than $370, at $357 :P
not to mention marginally better than the 930...

Always go with amd. Unless you cant afford it.
haha what if you want to encode video but are on a tight budget?
AMD's slowest dual core costs right around $300 depending on shipping and such... and intels got a dual core for $125.
:P DONT always go AMD. it depends on what you want to do with it.

get any x2 cpu's doesn't matter x2 3800 or 4200, but not Intel pentium D 930...

actually wait about a week or so, socket am2 will deffinatly be better,

socket AM2 is out, and it isn't better. lol
they don't have to get an X2 if they don't want.
personally i prefer gaming and im willing to spend money for gaming performance... but the Pentium D line is really good for the money, and doesnt perform much worse in say.. video and audio encoding. in fact, for the money some pentium D's perform better.
they perform different and they're differently priced. just as any other time someone wants a cpu, tell us what applications you want to use it for and we'll help you pick one out.
generally X2's are all around good at gaming and multithreading processors, but they cost a lot. Pentium D's are better for your money if you just want to do a lot of encoding + converting... and multithreading. single core athlon 64's are great processor's if you simply want to play single threaded games. personally, i think Pentium 4's have worn their welcome since they used to be the multithreading processor to get... but now theres pentium D and the line of X2's.
again... they're all just different, better in some apps, worse in others.

The 930 is $195 on newegg.

And again, he's asking about the 4200+, not the 3800+.

You have no idea how wrong it is to say that...

The Pentium D 930 is also 1/3 the price. And you may not think it performs well, but in fact the PD 930 is an extremely good processor, especially for the price. Also a good overclocker.

As fade2green said, the difference between the 939 and AM2 X2's are very very slight.

it was $199 at the time.
he shouldn't even be debating the 4200+ because its not worth the extra money for a simple 11x multiplier... vs. a 10x that can be o/ced to 4600+ speeds effectively.
