Hey guys new to the forums and in need a big help..

So its 2012 and a lot of new games are comming out and my computer is kinda broken but i think i know the problem. Also i wanted to name some parts kind of vague to see what i would need to either upgrade or if its still good in this time of computers haha. My computer was made from a friend so i honestly dont know much but here goes.

Problem #1 my computer randomly shuts off on me anywhere from 10minutes in use to about 45min in use. I turn it back on and it says cpu overheated so im guessing the problem is my cpu fan is not working and keeps shutting off my computer? if anyone can help me with this that would be great.

Specs i know of just checking my computer:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E8500 @ 3.16GHz (2CPUs)

RAM: 3328MB Ram (not sure what brand if that matters..)

Graphics: Nividia Geforce 9800 GT 512MB (integraded RAMDAC dont know what that means)

Hardrive: 465GB hardrive (dont know specifics again)

Lastly i dont know what kind of power supply i bought because the one my friend got me broke so i bought a cheap one to replace it not knowing anything :]. Also for fans i believe besides my cpu fan being broke i dont knoe about my other fan i think its also no functioning.. If you guys can help me figure this out that would be great. What i need to know is if i can just buy a new cpu fan or something and if my computer will run great for games or not. Or if i might have to buy new parts to keep it up to date since my computer is old.. This computer has not been upgraded in anyway since 2008 and its still running in windows xp dont know if that matters at all but is windows 7 worth the buy?

Any response is appreciated thank you!

Can you tell us what motherboard you have? You can download speccy and it will tell you.

http://www.piriform.com/speccy

Run the program and tell us what it says for motherboard.

We would need to know what motherboard you have so we know what processors it supports. If the cpu fan is not running then yes, its overheating and you would just need a new fan.

We would also need to know what types of games you plan on playing so we know what graphics card would work for you and most likely you would need a new power supply since you bought a cheap one.

Also the games i run are games like Starwars the old republic diablo 3 starcraft 2 battlefield 3 dota 2 i just want to run them in like ultra nice graphics and have it be real smooth for once.. :] i could also post the summary for the program if it would help..

so basically a completely new computer? haha i mean honestly i really do want to make a computer mainly for gaming.. but i really didnt have any clue.. so basically everything on my computer is kinda useless? haha im sorry but when u say it might be better to build a new computer what do people usually do with their outdated old stuff? just toss it? hahaha i know to make a really nice gaming desktop is very pricey and my original budget for upgrading was probably around $700..

Like I said if you could find a Q9650 on ebay or somewhere to where it would at least give you a quad core cpu and I believe BF3 will only support vista and windows 7 not XP so you would need to get windows 7.

I'm getting ready to leave for work so I can't help too much more, maybe someone else will reply with a suggested build. You could search around to see if you can find the Q9650 anywhere while you are waiting. If no one replies i'll try to post a new build tonight when I get home if I have time.

That would be great if u can help me
Out some more with a build or anything else.. Also the thing your asking me to find on eBay or whatever I don't even kno what that is or why I need such a specific one.. Also it's not jus bf3 I want a full on gaming equipment :) but any help would be great from u or anyone else that reads this post and also I can give u better budgets etc for everything else!! Thanks again even though I don't understand to much you been great help so far..

Well what country are you in and are you open to building?

And some very nice gaming systems don't cost too much. You can build a pretty decent gaming build for 850 dollars.

well i live in the states cali to be exact and i thought really good gaming desktop would cost about double.... $1600.. haha i do want a really nice one and im very open to building a new one. the only problem is my last one i just posted was about 800 couple years back and i want one so much better.. i felt like i wasted money and only got to use it for so lil with no upgradable potential.

You could reuse some of your parts to give you an advantage in building with that budget.

Hard drive can be reused (back up any data you cant loose). That will save a pretty penny.

If you wish to reuse your case, that will also aide.

Otherwise:

This is of coarse assuming you reuse the HDD and case. You will need ~30 more to get a good case (HAF912) and you need windows, which I already budgeted for (99).

i was just wondering since the motherboard of the phenom says 3.0ghz does that mean its slower than my 3.2ghz computer? jus wondering and also.. is amd better than intel or is there any real difference between the like amd brands and intel i series? thank you very much for the repost with links lets say i was not on a budget and i wanted to spend about $1,500 how nice can i make a computer meant for gaming?

That 3GHz will be faster than your C2D simply because of Quad cores (though yours is probably faster clock for clock). Think of it like this, If I have a 475 HP 350 CID, and a 450 HP 454 CID, then the 454 will do more per revolution than the stronger (aka faster) 350 would.

Intel rules the market on efficency, but AMD rules on the performance per $.

For 1500, you could get a 2500k (intel), GTX570 or GTX580, a bigger hard drive, and some other odds and ends if you wanted. If you would like, I can put you together a build list for the 1500 range to let you see the difference.

Please if u could jus put up a build list that would be awsome and for hard drives I really don't need so much space.. Also wats a ssd and I don't need one?

SSD is a Solid State Drive. It is basically a really big flash drive on the SATA connection. The main advantages are speed and durability (far less damage from a drop). The main drawback is price per GB, but thanks to flooding in third world countries, that disadvantage has nearly became an advantage for them.

As for the $1500 build, its here. Sorry for the wait, I just got in from school.

and still leaves $105 if I added right for anything else you might need/want. any DVD drive will do on one, the best value changes daily, so just grab the cheapest one available when you plan to buy.

This still leaves out the $100 for windows.

Is there anyway someone else can build their ultimate gaming setup for 1500? The only reason for that is I want to compare with wolfes... Also I changed my mind I would love to play games like diablo 3 and star wars no battlefield 3 and also upcoming mmo's on ultra settings.. If possible thanks and sorry if I'm asking for to much like the post I don't kno much but I'm understanding something's from everyone's post on this thread :)

So you will or won't be playing BF3? Your post a little confusing.

a build for diablo and a build for bf3 for 1500 each are going to be the same, only difference would be if diable liked amd gpus and bf3 likes amd, then we might change that, but overall they'd be identical.

Sorry for the confusion I meant I won't be playing games like bf3 I'm more leaning towards mmorpg games to come something like blade and soul looking at those graphics it seems high end.. And I was basically jus tryin to ask for someone else's wish lost when it came to a 1500 budget computer since I wanted to compare.. Computer is only for gaming and jus regular computer use ie Internet :)
