Hi everyone, I just got a new laptop with windows vista on it, and I've been trying to connect to the internet but for some reason I cannot, my wireless router is a linksys and it requires a password, but I cant seem to find the right linksys from the list that the windows network comes up with because whenever i click on what i believe is the right one it doesnt ask me for the password.

Im not sure what im doing wrong, if anyone can help id love it, I have a macbook that I'm using to type this so the wireless internet is working and I connected to it easily with the mac.

thanks

The default username and password for linksys routers is:

for older ones:

user:
pass: admin

for more modern ones:

user: admin
pass: admin

Type into your url bar on firefox or IE or whatver you are using:

192.168.0.0

If that doesnt work then change the last digit until you get up to .9, so:

192.168.0.1
192.168.0.3

etc.

If that doesn;t work, change the first 0 to 1 and repeat the above, so instead it would be 192.168.1.1 etc.

One of these will work.

When you are in make sure that SSID boradcast or broadcast SSID are enabled and check what the SSID is, this is the name of your network.

Go back to your other system that you are trying to connect with and in the bottom right look for the computer with the red x through on your toolbar. Right click it and click connect to a network. Click refresh and find your router, it should be on there. Put the wep key in and then that should be it.

If it still won't let you connect then:

Go back to the router and go into it. Go to security or wherever it has an access list. Create a new access. There should be the options of name and mac address. Put the name in that you can easily identify, so "new laptop" or whatever and then put the mac address in.

To find the mac address on your new laptop go to:

start>programs>accessories>command prompt

type in "ipconfig /all" without the "

a few long lists should come up but if you scroll up a little you will find one that has the word wireless in the name, so wireless adapter or something in the name. That is the one you are looking for. Look for where it says mac address. Make a note of it so you can put it into the router.

Now do the connect with the right click the computer, refresh, double click your network, type in the key.

This should have made it work.

Should you ahve any problems i'll keep an eye on the post and give you a hand with anything that comes up :)
