yesterday, was a very sad day for me. I woke up to a dead mobo, and cpu. not sure what caused both to die .. alas my precious has met her time...
need to build a new box pretty fast this is what im thinking. I appreciate any input, thanks:

What do you intend to do with the machine? whats your max budget?

The power supply you choose is way way over the top for that setup.

you could prob go for a cheaper mobo and a bit less ram and use the leftover cash for a quad core? 4 gb of ram should be enough for now
 
$1200 after tax.. thats 5 percent ... so 1142.85 , taking $15 in recycling tax (alberta) .. that laves me $1127.85.

Right so thats $1127.85 candian.....but you didnt mention what you want to do with the machine...You want to game?...if so what games etc

do you need an os? keyboard?monitor etc?
 
I would suggest only 4gb RAM, a cheaper PSU (you could probably shave off $100 without to much work), and upgrade the CPU. Personally I've never had a problem with only 4gb RAM and a quad-core running Win7.
Also, just need to ask, are you sure it is BOTH the mobo and CPU? Also, what about the rest of the old system?
 
saving harddrives, thinking of swapping the one listed for a SSD and then using the drives.

as for what i want to do , i play some games.. would like it to be ready for diablo3 and SC2 assuming they ever come out..

SSDs are great. They are expensive though. If you don't mind the hassle of installing and uninstalling games it's great for that. It really depends on how much space you need (I seems to go through storage at a crazy rate)
It should be able to SC2 pretty well. (it's in beta finally!) For Diablo3 I can't say anything for as I haven't been following it.
I think a 650W would be fine, but don't hold me to that.
 
k and i know this is the wrong place to ask ..

but im in a rush ..

my monitor is a 305t - it needs the dual-dvi cable to go upto 2500*1600 display .
im looking at vid cards, and some are listed as dual-dvi and some are dvi-d ..

are those the same thigns? or should only be looking at dual-dvi?
 
Corsair TX650 will power that without any issue what so ever, it is $99 anywhere. Then buy 1 ATI 5770 card.

It has 2 DVI ports if you need them. I don't know much about that question but one of these will be better than the other 2 cards by far performance wise. Unless you need 2 cards for some reason...

Update, it is hard to make a dirrect comparison since these cards are not in the same league they are not reviewed.

Even if you did get 2x performance in CF (you wont) the 5770 is a better card. "Like its higher-end variants in the 5000 series, you can hook up to three high resolution monitors (up to 2560x1600) to this board" From first link

I agree. The Phenom II 550 Dual-Core is a better processor than the Athlon II 240 and it is not much more expensive.

You may also want to look at the Phenom II 720 Tri-Core Processor. But NewEgg is only selling the 720 without a heatsink now for a decent price so you would also have to buy a heatsink.

At that price I would just get a quad-core processor over the Phenom II 720 Tri-Core. In my opinion I would go with either the Phenom II 550 or the Phenom II 945.

You don't have to uninstall games, just install them on a hdd. Then, take the folder of the game (or game files if steam) and use the command mklink to put them on the ssd while the game thinks they are still on the hdd.

Also, I have a better gpu then in the first post in my htpc and I have a psu thats around 450 watts.
