need help fixing my laptop

I'm trying to repair a laptop that I got a year ago in Japan.

It doesn't even start up windows saying its unable to find an operating system. I think its the HDD because before it broke it was having trouble loading windows, plus it makes a strange sound like a disc scratching/skipping.

So I am going to buy the cheapest HDD I can get for it. My question is will any cheap hdd do?

Also... when I came back from Japan, I reinstalled windows xp in english and lost all the drivers which I couldn't find online or get from the manufacturer, because they only service this computer in Japan.

Would a usb sound adapter work?
Any suggestions as to what I can do if I am unable to find the driver for my video card?

no there are two types of hd. ata and sata. most have ata but you may want to just check. also the usb driver will only work if the usb drivers work
