need help from someone who knows a lot about computers

First of all sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

I am trying to install a windows 95 game on my XP. It's called Zork: Nemesis. I have been trying for a couple of weeks to get it to work, but to no avail. Their is a way to install it. As seen here:

now i know a lot about video games. But only the artistic part. I must admit I am not the brightest when it comes to computer specs and stuff. So i have a few questions. In the link above the article tells you to download different things. Some of these things i dont understand, nor do i understand how to work them. So here are some questions.

1. what are patches? (i assume they patch things in the game)
2. where would i put the patches on my computer?
3. do i need winzip to use patches?
4. how do i run a patch? (do i activate them before starting the game)
5. What is a Vesa Driver?
6. How do i know which vesa driver to use?
7. Where do I put a Vesa Driver on my computer?
7. do i need winzip to get a freeware vesa driver?
8. How do i run a vesa driver?
9. Also I have the exact same questions about VDMSound + VDMS launchpad, that I did about Vesa Drivers.

Please help me. I am absoulutley dying to play this game. It has become something of an obsession actually. If you looked at the link and have any other tips please tell me. I will give you my eternal grattitude. thank you...

1.) patches just fix some problums with it
2.)just double click on the patch and it should install
3.)depends if it is a zip or rar
4.)just install it once and your done
5.)something you load everytime before you play it
6.)not shure
7.)not shure but probably not unless its in a zip or rar
8.)mabye click on it?

also to play it did you try right clickong on the install exe and go to compatibilty tab and check the box then click on the operating system to 95
 
computer ruler, can i run a patch as a compressed file. Because i have winzip. winzip will download things, but if you try to run a winzip file they want my money. can i use them as compressed zip folders. And the universal vesa driver i downloaded. When i try to activate it. a little dos box like thing appears. Then my screen goes blank. Then my screen comes back on like nothing happend.
 
I can answer some more questions:

A vesa driver is like a generic video driver. This shouldn't really be a problem on XP???

Is your CPU dual core? This is a known problem for games that were designed before dual core days. You can Google for patches which will make your game run on just one core.
 
okay thanks master, Im going to start the epic journey, once again, of trying to install this game.

and for the guy with the cpu question. For all i know i have a tricore cpu. lol. jk. I dont know. This computer is five years old and has never been customized hardware wise.
 
5 years? i'm betting on a pentium 4. if you want to check, just right click "my computer" and select the "properties" option. oh, and by the way, i dont know what anyone else thinks of this program, but i have found universal extractor to be a great freeware program and i havent found any type of compression method that it cant decompress...just google for it. cause unless you unzip folders, they wont run right. and by the way, when you install a patch it should go straight to the folder that has all of the files for that game, otherwise just find that folder under program files and put the patch file there yourself.
 
holy crapmuffins you guys. I am so close to getting this to work. I know what is wrong with it now. I have properly installed it doing the convoluted installation method. Their is only one problem left. What version of quicktime do i need to use. See this game is like myst. its a point and click game... anyway myst needs a certain quicktime in order for it to work. This game was made in 96, know which one to use?

thank you for all your help guys. If you want to see how bad ass the game is, someone posted a playthrough of the game on youtube. Its called Zork Nemesis. Everyone remembers myst put Zork nemesis was so much cooler. And darker.
