So ive been searching for weeks about this and i have not found a fix.. Maybe my hdd is dying. its about 3 years old. I have tried disabling some services and finally today i restored my laptop and my computer is still laggy, hanging with 100% disk usage. its an hp dv6 with an amd a8 chip. I have tried defrags and dsk checks and it still wont help. and it reports no errors. so i want to check if the hdd is stuck in PIO mode or if its in DMA but when i go to my device manager and select the channel in advance settings i get nothing.. I am running windows 10. So my task manager says disk is at 100 percent but i see the read/write speeds dip as low as 512kb and highest i seen it was at 15mbs. So if someone could please help me solve my issue that would be great :D ive included some screen shots thanks!

Go to the process tab, click on the hdd column so it sorts usage by most first and then post a new screenshot.

The antimalware service executable is windows defender running. Windows defender is crap, you can disable it and that should help. Is it always that process using up the hdd?

no its not always that process.. i disabled it though. its different processes. what im wondering why would it be pegged at 99% or 100% if the read and write speeds are low?

Even if read and write speeds are low, that doesn't mean it's not constantly accessing the disk.

99% at 1 MB/sec is usually indicative of an issue. The CPU isn't pegged out when this happens so you should be in DMA instead of PIO. Also, if you take a look at resource monitor it will give you an idea of what's using the most IOPS too.

Could you run something like CrystalDiskMark so we can laugh at the pathetic figures from the HDD? ;)

Do you have a spare drive to test with to maybe isolate issues with the drive itself as opposed to the chipset or SATA controller?

Nah i dont have a spare drive.. would reformatting and a fresh install help out?
