hi, this is my 1st post and i really need some help.
i am working on my friends laptop. it is a compaq presario c700.
the hardrive stopped working so i replaced it with a wd 320gb, 1st time changing one and it was piece of cake.
originally loaded it with xp but had trouble finding drivers, then some guy wrote somewhere that, that notebook is not compatible and hp dont have xp drivers, he said u might find them but will have trouble with sound and other things.
so they only had oem version of vista home basic 64 bit, so i installed that.
in device manager, under unknown devices there were 4 yellow exclamation mark.
the 1st being ethernet and the other 3 unknown.
i looked on hp and googled and found drivers for not exactly c700, cos they didnt have it but c700 with maybe some other letter after it like c700em or similar.
downloaded them to a flash drive and plugged it into the c700 and just double clicked on each driver and some seemed to install better than others. now the sound works on the speakers and i think graphics and chipset installed, also i didnt install chipset 1st:/
anyway so the only yellow exclamation mark left now is for unknown devices ethernet, i used a program called halfdone and it told me it was atheros communications wireless, tried a driver and it didnt work, so no wireless and not even when i plug the ethernet cable into it. if i can get internet goin i can use an auto driver checker program. thanks

Go into device manager and right click on each device that needs a driver and click on properties. Then click on the details tab and give me the 4 digit vendor and device ID numbers. They look like the attached image.

If you have vista installed, it may look a little different.

ok went to details and used the drop down box(vista) and selected hardware id's. here it is
other devices-ethernetcontroller:
pci\ven_168c&dev_001c&subsys_137b103c&rev_01
pci\ven_168c&dev_001c&subsys_137b103c
pci\ven_168c&dev_001c&cc_020000
pci\ven_168c&dev_001c&cc_0200

not sure if this is what u want, there are all kinds of different numbers depending on what drop down item i select, there is COMPATIBLE ID'S,PHYSICAL DEVICE OBJECT NAME,DEVICE INSTANCE PATH,PARENT,amongst others.
i also have 1 more device under other devices labled unknown device but think we will just try to get ethernet goin for now then i should be right. thanks so much for helping out, mate.

oops! just realised after all that typing that ur drop down box says device instance id, so he is the details under device instance path.
pci\ven_168c&dev_001c&subsys_137b103c&rev_01\4&18789a29&0&00e0

This driver should get it installed for you.

click on the yellow download box on the driver dated 12-6-2009

ok so ive tried that site already, but tried again and same thing happened. i click on save to my flash drive and it gets to about 80kb of 853kb or something and then the download box disappears. when i try to unzip the driver on the c700 its says please insert disk with multiset or something like that.
tried to save on the desktop of my pc and says cannot open file, when i double click on it. i dont think it fully downloads, and also the atheros site is really slow and i have to click d/load a few times before the yellow box up top asks if i want to d/load from this site. any ideas.

I just downloaded the file from that link it downloaded all the way, I unzipped it and the files are there. All you would need to do is go into device manager and right click on the device and click on update driver and point the update to whereever you downloaded it to and it will update. There is no EXE file to click on, the files are actually the .inf files. The site is slow but only click on the download button once and let it load up.

managed to d/l it only by pressing open and not save for some reason. extracted it then put on flash drive and opened it on c700. d/clicked on every item and nothing happens, however there is 2 .inf files. in device manager, where it says "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer", what hardware type do i select and then choose a brand from the list. and say have disk and browse to where the file is on the flash drive.

Right click on the device to update, click on update driver. Choose to install from a different location and browse to where you saved those files. Once you get there the defualt inf should automatically be selected and click on open and it should update the driver.
