So I bought a new refurbished computer. When I try and connect my monitor it does not work. It is telling me I do not have monitor connected to video card. I may need different cable or plug. That is what message on screen says. I disconnected and connected it to old computer to email computer company. They wanted picture of back of tower.. But its hurry up and wait days for help from them. So I am posting it here

What does your monitor cable look like? If the cable doesn't hook up to the dark blue 15pin VGA port then you would need an adapter. If you do have it connected to the vga port then the video card is either bad or something else is going on.

Wait, you see that card down toward the bottom which has hdmi and Display port? That would be the video card most likely and would need to connect to that. Once a dedicated video card is installed, it overrides the onboard video.

As johnb35 said, you need to attach an hdmi cable to the hdmi port on the installed card. If you don't happen to have an hdmi cable handy, you could remove that video card and then connect your monitor to the dark blue vga connector.

I did connect it to the Dark Blue one. It is the one I have connected to old computer. And the hdmi port down below which I assumed would be video card is in part blocked by case they put computer on. This is why I emailed them. I want to know where they think I should install monitor. I guess I will have to order a different connector. I have one that turns vga into HDMI from another computer but it will not fit in this small area. It would clash with the case in part that is sticking out. Thanks for the reply. I will wait days for them to email me back I just wanted another to tell me if video card was down below where I thought it was.

Take out the card that has the hdmi and display port on it. Once that card is removed then the blue vga port will work and you can connect your monitor to it.

If you open the case, you shoud be able to loosen the screw holding the video card in place and shift the video card a little so that you can plug a connector into the hdmi port. Once you get the card positioned well, re-tighten the screw. It's very common for that to happen.

Or, as has been mentioned by myself and johnb35, you could simply remove that video card and then when you connect your monitor cable to the dark blue vga connector, it will work. That will get you going until you can get a workable solution to connecting your monitor via hdmi. Most likely the capabilities of the video card will be superior to the video built into the motherboard so you will want to use the video card. However, if you just use the computer to surf the web and other general computing, you may not notice any difference.
