I have a compaq presario 5000 that formerly had windows ME on it. I used windows xp install disk and wiped out the ME and started installing XP on it. I got thru most of installation and told me to reboot and remove disk. I did this and then it would only boot to a black screen with a gray bar across the bottom and it would freeze. I try to use compaq me recovery disk and since Me is is obviously gone it cannot restore it. I am now stuck with an empty box that won't do anything. Can anyone help me or give me any suggestions?

I have done this. I am trying now to redo it but when it tells me to remove disk, just leave it in and change boot order to hard drive cuz intallation might still need some files off the cd to complete.

You don't have to remove the CD after installing. Just leave it in, and it will say "Press any key to boot from CD". When you see this, don't hit anything, wait a few seconds, and it should boot up fine and finish the installation.

Did exactly that to no avail. Computer will still begin to boot xp and microsoft logo will appear and then it freezes on a black screen with a grey bar across the bottom. Downloaded a program called dban and wiped entire hard drive clean and reinstalled xp but will still freeze and boot to black screen. Really stuck here. Never had a problem with a fresh install before.

reformat the harddrive fully, theres probably still traces of ME left, and that version was buggy as hell... boot into dos and type fdisk, delete the partition and create another, then the xp installation will format the newly made partition and it will install as if it were brand new

He said that he wiped the hard drive, so it should be fully reformatted. I had a problem like this once, and it ended up being a hardware conflict. In my case, my video card was damaged, and froze whenever loading windows. Try moving the drive to a different computer and installing windows, or try removing everything but the basic hardware.
