I'm not real computer savvy so bear with me...about a week ago i had to restart my computer to be able to play a game. when the system restarted, the display on the monitor was completly messed up. It was only showing 640 x 480 resolution and displaying 16 colors, and it won't give me the option to increase either of the values. The computer is a gateway and the monitor is a ev910. I all ready downloaded a new driver for the monitor and installed it but nothing happened. Does anybody have any idea what could have possibly happened?

1. Start
2. Run
3. Type dxdiag
4. Goto the Display tab
5. List the items in the "device" box

name: Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)
Manufacturer: (Standard Display Types)
Chip Type: n/a
DAC Type: n/a
Approx total Memory:
Current Display Mode: 640 X 480 (4 bit)
Monitor: Gateway EV910

Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)
Ok that's your problem there.... your operating system hasnt detected the actual video card/chip on the computer and is running in failsafe mode (which is why you have such crappy display). You will have to install the video drivers in order to get the video to work out properly ... what's the make/model of the gateway? :)

the only description i can see on the front of the computer is the number 450
is there any other way i can tell what model it is? i dont have any of the original paperwork from it.

ok i punched in my serial number and its telling me its a PERFORMANCE 450, a desktop. thanks for your help by the way

Ok i checked the specs on my computer when it was originally shipped and it says it was supposed to have a 16mb 3Dfx Voodoo Banshee AGP Graphics Accelerator [Part #6001005]I looked for it in the advanced section of the display under control panel on the adapter tab, and i couldnt find it. Am I looking in the wrong place or do I need to find a new driver for the video card. Also, if I can't find it for any other reason, is there any way to detect what video card I have installed without opening the computer itself?

You're lookin in the right place but you need drivers before anyting meaningful is shown

Actually I found the right download through the Gateway site. Now my computer looks better than ever. Thanks for your help, You pushed me in the right direction I might not have otherwise taken
