I recently bought a new harddrive for my other computer and the one i used to have ran off of an IDE cable. The new harddrive i have uses a SATA cable. my mobo supports both but when i go into the BIOS to switch it over i cannot seem to find the option. the BIOS that my mobo uses is Pheniox -Award BIOS 2005(i believe).

What happens is i boot up, goes through a few black screens then brings me to the screen that asks if i want to boot in safe mode, regular, ect. i hit boot windows normally and it just resets and takes me back to the same screen. I also tried clicking safe mode, same thing. and when i tried "boot windows from last known working..." it says windows cannot boot because its missing a file. something to the effect of \WINDOWS\system32\config\SYSTEM

when i go into my bios i can see my harddrive and how much availible space there is on it.

any help would be awesome.

There is no switch while drivers previously not installed may be needed for the onboard sata/RAID controllers. Unlike an ide drive a Sata II(Serial ATA) doesn't use jumper settings for the position on the cable since only one drive is installed. The port the sata data cable is plugged into determines how it will be displayed on the post screen as primary or secondary master or slave.

When having more then one hard drive installed the boot order section in the bios sees the "hard drive" item there usually depending on make and model board. When highlighting that and pressing enter a new screen showing the drives installed is displayed and instructions for rearranging the order is seen in the right column usually the use of the (+)plus amd (-)minus keys for bringing the boot drive to the top of that list to see it set as default.
