okay, so i was looking at a 9800gtx 512mb DDR3 video card for my computer. Then, i noticed it was DDR3. i dont know if my mother board supports that, or what i need. I am not very knowledgeable on computer hardware, but im gettin there. Here are some specs about my computer that may be helpful in helping me decide:
MY COMPUTER:
  • Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professinal (5.1, build 2600)
  • System Manufacturer: HP-Pavilion
  • System Model: a6430f
  • BIOS: Phoenix- AwardBIOS v6.00PG
  • AMD Phenom)tm) 8400 Triple-Core Processor, MMX, 3DNow (3 CPUs), ~2.1GHz
  • HDD: I have 2 320 GB HD's and there only showing up as like 127 GB on XP. dont know how to fix this, but if you can help!
  • Memory: 3070MB RAM
  • Mother Board:ASUS-M2N68-LA HERES A PIC: http://www.jowaynet.com/zhuoweiy/UPloadpic/2007122911362657375.jpg
  • Directx Version: 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

Display:
  • Name: NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT (SUUUUCCCCCKS)
  • Current Display Mode: 1680 x 1050 (32bit) (60Hz)
  • Main Driver: nv4_disp.dll
  • Version: 6.14.0011.8520
  • DDI Version: 9 (or Higher)

Cant think of anything else to give specs on. Main question here, is that i have that mother board listed above, and want to get a 9800gtx 512MB DDR3 and i want to know if that can even use it? Probley not, but please help. Also, if you know a cheap price on a 9800GTX then throw it my way, or one equivalent or better for same price! also if my motherboard needs to be smashed and i need to buy a new one, let me know, and give sum good links to some for cheapest price. thanks.

The reason your hard drives are only showing up as 127 gb is because you are using a pre SP1 install of XP. SP1 and higher fixed that issue. Have you upgraded to SP2 or SP 3? If so then you can go into disk management and just partition the balance of the drive and format it.

According to HP, you have a PCI-E port available for a video card. DDR3 memory on the video card has nothing to do with the memory on the computer. You can use regular DDR system memory and use DDR4 memory on a video card. So the memory on the video card doesn't matter.

i have no where to backup my files. lost my cd at my friends. any ideas on what i sould do? and, i think i understood your explanation on the video card, but just to be sure, so i can use that card. the only thing i need to worry about a graphics card working on my computer would be to check and see if its the right pci or pci-e?

You need a PCI-E video card. If you lost your cd then you would have to find someone with the exact same cd as you had and copy it but you would have to use the key that came with your copy originally, not theirs.

2.0 will work in 1.0 slot and 1.0 will work in 2.0 slot. Both are backwards compatible. You are good to go as long as the power supply will handle it.

Chances are you only have about a 300 watt power supply in there. i can't see anything on the HP website, you might have to open the case to see if the power ratings are on the side of the supply. Check to see if you have a pci express power connector(6 prong) from the power supply.

300W is correct. the only thing i can see on the molex is p8 4 pin connectors. and other p's like p6 and p4.so how do i know, now that i know my power supply?

300 watts will not be enough to run that video card. Do you know of anybody that is computer savvy that can help you to see if that power supply can be changed to something bigger? I would say at least a 500 watt if not more.

not many people know much around here, well that i know of. are brand names important, and any other specs other than wattage? I have service pack 3, i just need to format, i need a back up cd though. working on looking for it. god damn power supplies.

Power supply isn't that hard to change. order one, pull out the old and shove in the new (reconnecting everything to the right place of course, and making sure the connectors are correct).

Also, check this link to fix your hard drive problem :)

Window s XP Service Pack 3 (direct download)

You have to remember something though. OEM's like to use out of spec cases so that you have to go back to them for parts. He would have to make sure the PS in his HP case is a standard atx supply.

Yeah, I suppose that might be a problem. Shouldn't the size/format be on the label on the PSU anyway?

I've never had any problem replacing any stuff that I bought before (but the last 3 years, I've been building everything, so I don't know if it's changed).
